FROM TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR TO NIGERIA JAGA JAGA

Not too long ago, we sang “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” with the kind of innocence that only childhood can give. Our small voices filled the air with hope, wonder and a deep belief in the beauty of the world around us.

I remember singing it as a child, looking up at the sky and smiling at the stars. I had a small stool I always sat on at night, right in front of our compound. That was my special spot. Then we grew up and slowly, life started to feel different. The stars are still in the sky but I hardly remember to look up anymore. I can’t even remember the last time I attentively saw stars in the sky.

There is just too much noise everywhere, too many thoughts in our heads and too many things not working around us. We stopped singing about stars and started singing about struggle. Suddenly, it was “Nigeria Jaga Jaga.” Then it was “This is Nigeria.” The lyrics changed because life changed and we began to feel the weight of bad governance, economic hardship, insecurity and a system that seems more broken than built. It was not something we planned.

One day, you are singing nursery rhymes in your school uniform and the next, you are stuck in traffic, listening to Fela and wondering how everything he sang about years ago is still happening now. Innocent has grown to meet awareness. These days, we sing to speak out, to stay strong or just to feel happy in the moment and forget the reality that is slapping our cheeks.

What song did you love to sing as a child? What song speaks FOR YOU now?
