Nigeria's History In a snippet

Civil war broke out after Lieut. Col. (later General) Odumegwu Ojukwu declares the secession of the three states of the Eastern region under the name of the Republic of Biafra. Ethnic pressures between the northern Hausas and southern Igbos were the primary cause. This war lasted for three years, ending with Biafra dropping all weapons and surrendering in January 1970 due to hostilities, disease, and starvation, it is estimated between three million people died. This agitation has currently been awoken by Ojukwu Jnr over the last few years.

Diving into entertainment Afro Star Fela Kuti and his band released an album zombie which was directed at the Nigerian Military and who is a constant critic of the government. At some point, the authorities got to retaliate by sending hundreds of troops against Fela and his commune. His mother was a victim of this attack and was thrown out the window and died during this process and his properties were set on fire. Let us not forget that Fela Kuti was honored with the first MTV Music Award for Africa in 2008.

In the educational section, Prof Wole Soyinka was the first African Black to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. His masterpiece focuses on tackling issues relating to oppression and is also a critic of the Military activities in the era of Gen Babangida. Soyinka was forced to flee Nigeria in 1990 due to some retaliation whatsoever.

Lastly sports, In the year 1996 the Nigerian Super Eagles stunned the world when they clinched gold which saw them defeating almighty Brazil and Argentina along the path to glory with a 3-2 victory.

There is a load of history clung to this great nation from 1960 till date. On June 8 Abacha died in 1998 and Agbani won the Miss World as the First African Black Woman in the year 2001. History will forever be created as long as Nigeria is concerned.

From 1960-2015 history has been made and created more compared to 2016-2022, either good or bad it is going down the drain. We all know history is meant to be made for the coming generation to reminisce on. We cannot all be banking on the history of our forefathers, this present generation in a nutshell is not going the extra mile in creating history for the later generation.
