SEXUALITY AND CULTURE

Our sexuality is like a cultural language, how we interpret it is shaped not only by biology but by the values, stories, taboos, concepts, beliefs and expectations of the various societies we live in. What one culture sees as sacred, another may see as sinful. In many societies, sexuality is tightly regulated and framed by religion, tradition, even colonial legacies often leading to stigma especially of women, queer people, and marginalized groups. Yet culture also holds the power to evolve.

As people, we could challenge dominant narratives, reclaim traditions, and create inclusive spaces that redefine what it means to be sexual, free, and human. Understanding sexuality through a cultural lens reminds us that it’s not universal, but fluid, and it is always shaped by the stories we tell and the freedom we allow.

Understanding sexuality through culture helps us question what we've been taught, challenge certain norms and create an avenue for open and respectful conversations.
