THE BEDROCK OF MODERN MEDICINE
<p>When we talk about medical laboratory science, not many people know what exactly it is or have even heard about it. </p><p>According to Google, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is a vital healthcare profession focused on analyzing blood, tissues, and bodily fluids to provide accurate data for disease diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. It can also be defined as the health profession that provides diagnostic services needed to detect and treat diseases </p><p>Well MLS is so much more than this, and today we're going to dive into basics everyone needs to know about this wonderful course and profession.</p><p>First and foremost, MLS is the bedrock of modern medicine, yes you heard that correctly. The why is so very simple. Without MLS, most of the medical diagnosis and decisions are rendered null.  </p><p>People studying or practicing MLS are known as medical laboratory scientists (or technologists) or also as lab technicians. They perform complex tests, manage lab equipment, and ensure quality control, aiding in 60-70% of medical decisions. </p><p>Now that we know these about MLS, we ought to know the key aspects of the course including the core discipline, roles and responsibilities of a medical laboratory scientist, the work environment and the impact of the course in the medical field.</p><p>Core Disciplines:<span style="background-color: transparent;">.The course disciplines under MLS where one can study</span> and work include hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and histopathology.</p><p>Roles and responsibilities: Scientists detect diseases (like cancer, diabetes, infection), perform blood counts, cross-match for transfusions, and monitor therapies among many others.</p><p>Work Environment: They work in hospital labs, clinics, public health labs, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, and forensics among many others.</p><p>Impact: They work "behind the scenes" to ensure precise, timely results, which are critical for patient care, though they rarely have direct patient contact. Without MLS and the scientists diagnosis cannot be made , therefore they are at the heart of the medical course and profession .</p><p>Now that we have covered some of the key aspects of MLS, let's move on to how one can become a medical laboratory scientist. </p><p>Education: Requires a Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field (like Biology or Chemistry).</p><p>Certification: Graduates often need certification (e.g., MLS(ASCP)) to practice.</p><p><br/></p><p>Career Growth: Opportunities include specialization, laboratory management, research, or quality assurance. There are some many things one can do and achieve in MLS and these are just the top of the iceberg.</p><p>Medical laboratory science is essential for modern medicine, bridging the gap between scientific analysis and patient treatment. What we just touched is just the surface area of what actually goes on in the course and the laboratory. Working in the laboratory is like being in a different world entirely.</p><p>I really hope we found this enlightening and now know at least the basics of this wonderful course known as Medical laboratory science, the bedrock of science.</p>
