The Law vs. Grace: A Discussion on Salvation.

want to share a discussion I had with my mom last week about obeying the laws God gave to Moses and the Good News of our Lord Jesus Christ. While reading the book of Galatians, I mentioned that the law of Moses is now useless. My mom quickly corrected me, saying, "The law of Moses is very important; it helps you have the fear of God and live a righteous life." She was ready to "school" me!

After she finished, I opened Galatians 3:1-5 (NIV) and asked her to read:

[1] You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. [2] I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? [3] Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? [4] Have you experienced so much in vain—if it really was in vain? [5] So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?

I then explained to her the reason for the law of Moses, as described in Romans 7:1-24. I emphasized that the law was given to show humanity how sinful and condemned we are, and that it's humanly impossible to please God with our sinful nature. We are condemned to suffer God's wrath. However, God, in His loving nature, pleased Himself for us, so that all humanity could be saved, as seen in John 3:16:

[16] For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

I further explained that our seal of salvation as believers is the Holy Spirit, received through faith in Christ. It's only faith in the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ that can save humanity, and subsequent growth through the Holy Spirit helps us keep the only Law of God, which is Love.

By God's grace, after our discussion, we concluded that only the Gospel of Christ is what's needed all the time – nothing less, nothing more. Only Christ.

I hope this shares our discussion and blesses someone.

– Ayodele Salako
