The Space You Left

5 years now... A while...

Since we severed what once seemed indivisible...

A while yes... Many an hour have traversed the bridge from past to present yet... It lingers ...

Like a tormenting wraith

It sparks into existence... Uninvited, untouchable... Yet painfully present...

It visits always with a match

It strikes and fire... Ignition.

I am set ablaze by a fire that understands not the meaning of quenching...

Yet what burns me is not fire...

I am engulfed by days of old. Memories heavier than the densest isotopes.

That snarky growl you would always give me whenever I teased you...

That smile of yours... Child like. Always a wonder to behold.

The warmth you gifted me whenever we found Solace in each other's arms.

I was a covering for you, as you were for me.

Those days of joy and bliss, when the sight of you extinguished the weight of worrisome wonders

Where the night sees the light of dawn and transitions into the brightness of day

I remember...

That night.

The stars bore witness as they were with us with their glitter.

The blades of grass bore witness as we imprinted our forms onto their assembly.

Our hands were entwined by stroke of bashful persistence. You had laughed like a woman possessed by mirth. I still see it, the look in your eyes as you whispered delights,

"I love you"

The laughter. It was a reaction a galaxy near your expectations. What you assumed to be mockery was actually humorous disbelief. My ears shook, my heart shivered. You had uttered sounds that the sweetest of melodies could never dare to match.

"I love you too. I've loved you for a while now"

You giggled... Do you remember.... You giggled... "Really?" You asked me.

I affirmed with averted gaze. The winds, the stars and the blades of grass, they heard.

Then the perplexity of it all. What happened?

It was meant to be happily ever after yet..

Now the fondness has soured... Recollection Sparks not ecstacy but pain. The scenes that once sprouted flower fields now conjure flames. It burns... It burns so much...

Yet all I can do is watch... And wait...

Cyclical, miserable.

Where did it all go wrong?

I cannot help but subject myself to the tormentous task of conjuring scenes of what could have been.
