The Upended Box

An upended box

It lies there...

How could a single box weigh so much

It carries burdens of old

Bauchi... Memories...

Of the happy girl that I was

Of the broken girl that I became

The nightmares followed

At least the eyes no longer traced my path

Each step is studied, examined, judged

To be seen is to be reminded of my stain

Yet this box, as it lays there

It is the flag that heralds new beginnings

It testifies the traversal from suffocation to salvation

It is all of the vastness of the city of Bauchi compressed into portable box

Here the air is fresher

The crowds are denser and the looks linger

The eyes are merely touches of perversion

Here there is no disdain

There is no sympathy

There is no pity

This is Kano

This is not Bauchi

Here I am no one

There I was a victim

Here I am merely a beautiful girl to be admired

There I was a stained girl to be pitied

Here I was a nice curvaceous figure and a pretty face

The eyes are slimy and putrid

But I can tolerate a little eye fucking

At least when the alternative was eyes pounding down with disgust, pity and sympathetic condolence

All of it now is condensed into the upended box

Well not everything can be spacialy contained

So the rest I set ablaze

The embers burnt bright

But the pain burnt fiercer

The memories chased me.

I have to live with them.

His face,

His grip

His putrid breath

The painful scream of my dying innocence

But at least Kano does not know who I am

Kano does not know of my stain

Kano does not know of the weight of the upended box
