The idea may have been to ensure a woman’s economic protection in a patriarchal society—but it opens a Pandora’s box of ethical questions. Did stability outweigh autonomy? Was the victim’s voice ever considered?</p><p><br></p><p>We’re not here to throw ancient people under the chariot, but to explore what this tells us about evolving ideas of justice and human dignity.
