Why is sex education a difficult topic for parents to discuss with their children?

In the words of Favour Adeyemo, a member of the TwoCents community...

Most kids nowadays — even our parents — didn’t learn sex education. All they were told, especially the girls, was: “If you touch a man, you’ll get pregnant.”

I remember that at the age of 9 or 10, my aunty sat me down to give me pep talks about puberty, menstruation, and sex. Not because I was too young, but because my body developed really fast at such a tender age.

What is it about these topics that makes them so uncomfortable to discuss — even though they’re crucial to a child’s development and safety? Why are they often overlooked by parents?

Yes, sex education is taught in schools, but the next best thing to a school teacher is a parent.
Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
