Newborn Bleeding: What Shocked Me and What I Learned

When I first learned that a newborn baby girl can sometimes have bleeding that looks like a “period,” I was genuinely shocked and scared. I thought it meant something was seriously wrong.

What I later learned is that some newborns can have light vaginal spotting in the first days of life due to hormone withdrawal after birth (a sudden drop in estrogen). It’s not puberty and not a true menstrual cycle.

Still, any blood in a baby’s diaper should be taken seriously. If it’s heavy, lasts more than a couple days, smells bad, comes with fever/illness, or happens weeks/months later, contact a healthcare professional urgently.
