BRIBE ME!

Maybe that's what I need.

You heard me; Bribe me.

Tell me there's a reward waiting at the end, and suddenly I am interested. Give me something to look forward to, and watch how quickly I become serious.

A good grade. Money. Recognition. A compliment. A promotion. A certificate. A “well done.” Even something as simple as, “After this, you can rest.”

Sometimes, I wonder.. maybe the reason we struggle to take certain things seriously is because we cannot see what we're getting from them.

Maybe we are not lazy. Maybe we are simply unconvinced. Maybe.

Because effort feels reasonable when reward is attached. Nahh, I didn’t lie there.

But what happens when there isn't one?

What happens when you study and nobody applauds?

When you do the right thing and nobody notices?

When you love someone well and they don't love you back?

When you build something quietly and there is no audience?

When you keep showing up, and the results seem to have misplaced your address?

Will we still do it?

That's where things get interesting. Because rewards are wonderful. They make effort feel visible. They remind us that something is happening.

But they can also become dangerous when we begin to believe that everything worth doing must immediately pay us back.

Some things don't. At least, not immediately.

Sometimes the reward is delayed. Sometimes it's invisible. Sometimes the reward is simply becoming the kind of person who can be trusted with the thing you're asking for.

And sometimes… there may be no obvious reward at all.

So, i think the real question isn't:

“What do I get if I do this?”

I think it is:

“Would I still do this if nobody promised me anything?”

Ouch.

I don't know. I'm still negotiating with myself.

So for now, BRIBE ME.

But maybe, just maybe, I should also learn how to show up when there is nothing on the table.

Because eventually, life will ask me to do some of its most important work…

…without offering me a prize for it.
