PART 11: HEAT IN THE AIR

A Gen Z Story by Zeewrites

Tunde stood at the door, frozen. His jaw tightened, his eyes darted between me and Mr. Ademola like he was piecing the whole scene together in his head. I didn’t even know what to say — my heart was pounding like I just finished running laps.

The COO, calm as ever, cleared his throat and said, “Miss Zara, you can leave now.”

I stood up immediately, adjusted my skirt, and walked out like nothing happened. But inside, my whole body was trembling.

Minutes later, I was back at my desk pretending to be busy when my phone buzzed. Tunde.

“Zara, my office. Now.”

His tone was sharp. My stomach flipped, but I went.

He closed the door behind me and leaned against it, staring straight at me.

“What was that? What did I just see?”

I tilted my head and smiled a little. “You saw a conversation. Nothing more.”

“Conversation? Zara, don’t play with me. That man—”

Before he could finish, I stepped closer, tracing my fingers along his arm. His muscles tensed immediately.

“You’re jealous, Tunde?” I whispered. “After all, you said I wasn’t your spec, remember?”

He froze. I could feel the air between us change.

I moved closer until my lips brushed his ear. “Relax. I’m not yours. I’m just… Zara.”

My fingers ran down his chest, slow and deliberate. He tried to speak, but his voice caught in his throat. I could feel the heat rising from him, the conflict written all over his face.

Just when I felt his breath hitch, I stepped back. “Don’t worry, Tunde,” I said softly, my tone dripping with confidence. “I won’t tell anyone you’re still staring.”

And then I walked out — without another word.

Back at my desk, Adam brought lunch as usual, smiling like everything was fine. He still called me baby, still checked on me, still believed I was the innocent girlfriend. The guilt stung a little… but only a little.

Later that day, I got a text from Mr. Ademola.

“My office. I’m waiting.”

I didn’t even hesitate. I already knew what my answer would be.

When I entered, he looked up from his laptop with that same confident smirk.

“So, have you thought about it?”

“I have,” I said quietly. “My answer is yes. But I’m still with Adam.”

He leaned back in his chair, eyes locked on mine. “Then we’ll keep it that way. Just… don’t let him take what’s already mine.”

The tension that followed was thick. He stood, circled the desk, and stopped right in front of me. The next few seconds felt like slow motion — his hand brushing my cheek, the air charged with something forbidden.

Then his lips met mine.

Everything that followed was a blur of heat and silence. The kind of silence that only happens when two people know they’re crossing a line they can never uncross.

When it was over, he sat back, composed, as if nothing happened. “Go back to work,” he said.

And I did. Like nothing happened.

The next few days went on smoothly. No one suspected anything. Adam was still bringing food, Cynthia was still pretending to be friendly, and Tunde… well, Tunde couldn’t even look at me without his eyes betraying him.

Until one afternoon.

Cynthia called Tunde to her office to “apologize.” She smiled too much, laughed too loud, trying to get his attention the way she used to. One thing led to another — she touched his shoulder, tried to kiss him.

But nothing.

He didn’t respond. Not a single reaction.

No spark. No movement. Just emptiness.

Tunde pulled away, confused, frustrated.

“What’s wrong with me?” he muttered to himself after she left.

He tried to shake it off, but his mind kept drifting — not to Cynthia, not even to guilt.

To me.

To Zara.

And that’s when it hit him.

He wasn’t supposed to care. He wasn’t supposed to feel anything. But he did.

And that, right there, was the real problem.
