The fine line (Episode 4)

Before you start reading this part, please go back to episode three.

I made a mistake while posting episode three yesterday, and I just corrected it. Please read it again so this episode doesn’t confuse you.

Sorry for the confusion.

Part 4

If you told me two weeks ago that both Tunde and Adam would be fighting for space in my mind, I’d have laughed. But look at me now — replying to Tunde’s late-night texts with butterflies in my stomach while holding Adam’s hand at work.

Tunde had started texting more lately. Not in a romantic way, just that kind of soft flirting that makes you forget it’s wrong. He’d send random messages like,

“You looked really fine today.”

or

“You’re curvier than Cynthia, you know?”

and then pretend like nothing happened the next morning at work.

At work, he’d still be all over Cynthia — hand on her lap, whispering things to her ear. But online? He’d be in my DMs, talking like we had some secret connection. I tried telling him to stop a few times, but this guy is too smooth. He never outright says anything terrible, just enough to mess with my mind.

Adam, on the other hand, was everything opposite. He’d bring me flowers, coffee, sometimes pay for my lunch even when I insisted I had mine. He was kind, soft, intentional — and every time I saw him, I felt peace. But still, Tunde had this annoying hold on my thoughts.

I started feeling guilty — not even for myself, but for Cynthia. She might not be my best friend, but I didn’t want to be the reason she got played.

So one day right before lunch, I called her aside. I knew if I waited till later, Tunde and Adam would show up and distract everything.

“Cynthia, there’s something I need to tell you,” I said.

She looked up, curious. “What’s up?”

I told her about the texts. How Tunde had been flirting with me online while acting like Mr. Loyal in person. I even pulled out my phone, ready to show her. But I stopped.

Because deep down, I knew I wasn’t innocent. There were times I’d replied with flirty emojis or laughed too hard at his messages. I couldn’t show her that.

“Cynthia, I’m not trying to cause problems,” I said quietly. “I just thought you should know.”

She cut me off mid-sentence.

“Zara, please. I know Tunde. He’d never do that.”

I froze.

She looked at me with this mix of irritation and disbelief.

“Be honest, you like him, right? You’ve been looking at him weirdly. You think I don’t notice? You’re trying to ruin what we have.”

I was speechless. My throat went dry.

That wasn’t true. I genuinely cared. I just didn’t want her being played by a man who couldn’t stay consistent with one woman. But there I was — looking guilty, phone in hand, no proof to defend myself.

Soon it was lunch break, and we all went out like nothing happened. But the whole vibe was off.

Cynthia was quiet, barely touching her food.

Tunde was trying too hard to be funny.

Adam sat beside me, his hand resting softly on mine, like he could sense I needed comfort.

And me? I just sat there, smiling through the awkward silence, pretending everything was fine — when deep down, everything was falling apart.
