<p>This is such a difficult case because two things can be true at the same time: the children’s deaths were horrific, and severe mental illness can complicate how we understand criminal responsibility.</p><p>I found the distinction between knowing something is wrong and actually being able to appreciate its wrongfulness especially interesting. It’s a painful subject, but definitely one that deserves more than a simple “she did it, end of discussion.”</p>
