24 and A Mansion (2)

His lips were already on mine when I grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him closer.

His hands moved over my waist, pulling me against him. My breath broke between kisses. My fingers tightened around his shirt. I whispered his name.

For a moment, it felt like old times.

Me and Tobi.

The one person I had wanted upstairs with me all night.

Then his fingers brushed the necklace around my neck.

He stopped.

“Wait.”

His eyes settled on the pendant.

“Where did you get this?”

I looked down.

“This?”

He touched it again, slower this time.

“Damn. This thing is expensive.”

I smiled.

“So?”

His eyes lifted to mine.

“Who gave it to you?”

My smile disappeared.

“Why do you care?”

He held my gaze.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“Whose house is this, Dami?”

I stared at him.

“Mine, of course.”

.....

Darkness had become thick. Shola couldn't tell how long she'd been inside. She had banged against the door until her palms hurt, but nobody came. She pressed her ear against it. Nothing...just the loud music downstairs. People shouting over the speakers and unlimited laughter.

Then

Tick.

Shola lifted her head.

Tick.

Her breathing changed.

She turned slowly.

The room was almost completely dark, but the faint light from her phone caught the shape of something standing in the far corner.

Tall..still...Covered with a white cloth. She stared at it. Every part of her body told her to leave it alone.

She moved closer anyway.

One step.

Then another.

Her hand reached for the cloth.

She pulled.

Her phone almost slipped from her hand.

It was a statue.

A life-sized statue of a young man.

The face, hair, and small scar above the eyebrow.

Shola froze.

Her lips parted.

“My brother…”

Her voice broke.

Her dead brother.

She stumbled backward.

“No…”

Another step.

“No, no, no…”

Her shoulder hit the wall.

Then a tiny red light appeared beneath the statue.

A speaker crackled.

And a voice filled the room.

“Shola?”

She froze.

Her brother's voice.

She knew that voice.

She had heard it a thousand times.

Before the accident and funeral.

Her eyes darted around the room.

“No…”

The voice came again.

“Shola?”

Tears filled her eyes.

Someone had recorded him.

Someone had built this.

Someone had brought her dead brother into this room.

And Dami knew.

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

She looked at the statue again.

“I'll kill Dami.”

She screamed.

But downstairs, the music swallowed the sound.

The party was getting louder.

A girl stood near the staircase, phone held high, livestreaming everything.

“Guys, look at this house!”

She turned the camera towards the chandelier.

“Twenty-four years old and she's doing this? God abeg!”

People laughed behind her.

Somebody shouted:

“Show them the kitchen!”

Another person walked into the frame.

“Dami, you are a big girl now!”

The comments kept flying.

Money is good!

God, don't let me die in Ikorodu 😭

24 and a mansion? Kee!

The girl laughed and turned the camera towards another section of the house.

“Wait till you guys see the..”

“Move!”

Kenny stepped into the frame.

“Take my picture here.”

Her friend lowered the phone.

“Kenny, you've taken like twelve pictures tonight.”

“And?”

“You rejected eleven.”

“This one isn't giving.”

“You look fine.”

“I need another one.”

She looked around.

“The background is too basic.”

Her friend sighed.

“Kenny, we're at a mansion.”

“And?”

She adjusted her dress.

“We've got to grab the opportunity. A lot of videos tonight.”

The camera came back up.

Kenny smiled. She immediately posted it.

For a few seconds, she watched the likes climb.

Then her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the notification.

Her smile disappeared.

She locked the screen.

Put the phone away.

And smiled again.

.....

Upstairs, Tobi was still looking at Dami.

“Why are you avoiding the question?”

“Tonight isn't the night.”

“Then when is?”

Dami walked past him and picked up her phone.

It rang.

MR. ADE.

She stopped.

Tobi saw the name.

She declined the call.

It rang again.

She declined it.

Tobi's jaw tightened.

“You told me you were done with him.”

“I am.”

“Then why is he calling you tonight?”

Dami said nothing.

“Does he know you're here?”

She looked at him.

For the first time that evening, Tobi didn't look like the man who had been kissing her five minutes ago.

He looked worried.

Then

BANG!

They both turned.

The sound had come from somewhere upstairs.

Dami's face changed.

Tobi noticed.

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

Another sound.

Louder.

BANG!

Tobi moved towards the door.

Dami grabbed his hand.

“Don't.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

She didn't answer.

Then the doorbell rang downstairs.

Once.

Twice.

The party slowly went quiet. Everyone turned towards the entrance.

Dami came down the stairs.

She reached the door.

Her hand rested on the handle.

She opened it.

Her face went completely blank.

She stared at the person standing outside.

“How did you find me?”

The person looked at her.

A slow smile appeared.

“You really thought I wouldn't?”
