Come back to me

WW II

She was a mother who had already known loss,

a widow carrying silence where love once lived.

Her husband became a memory,

and her son became the only heartbeat

that kept her broken world alive.

But war came like a thief in the night,

reaching into her arms

and taking away the child she had protected for fifteen years.

He was too young for battles,

too young for the sound of guns,

too young to carry the weight of a nation’s pain.

Yet she watched him leave,

with tears hidden behind a brave smile,

because mothers sometimes break quietly

when the world asks them to be strong.

And before he disappeared into the unknown,

she held his hands one last time and whispered:

"Come back to me."

Those words became her prayer,

her hope, her reason to wake each morning.

The war ended.

The soldiers returned,he didn't.

The years passed.

One year became five.

Five became ten.

But the door never stopped waiting.

Every morning, she reaches for the faded photographs,

tracing the face of the little boy

who once ran through her home.

She looks at his smile,

the smile of a child before the world changed him,

and she whispers to the empty room:

"My son is not dead…

he will come back to me."

People tell her to accept the silence.

They tell her the years have already answered her.

But a mother’s heart does not count years.

It counts memories.

It counts promises.

It counts the last words spoken by her child.

So she waits,

beside the doorway of yesterday,

holding onto a love that refuses to disappear.

Because somewhere inside her soul,

the fifteen-year-old boy she lost is still alive.

And she still believes…

One day,

he will come back to her.
