I HOPE MY MASK DOESN'T SLIP OFF

Some of us have mastered the art of saying "I'm fine" so when that even our silence goes unnoticed...

Funny how people learn to live with your silence, mistaking your endurance for peace. They see you laugh and assume you're healing, never knowing that sometimes, laughter is simply the easiest way to convince the world that you're still holding yourself together.

I become the person everyone runs to. The shoulder that never seems to tire. The friend who always has the right words, the sibling who understands, the child who never wants to become another burden. I learned to carry other people's sadness so gracefully that nobody thinks to ask whether your own hands are trembling.

And somewhere along the way, I begin to believe that my worth is measured by how much I can endure.

I become so accustomed to being needed that being vulnerable begins to feel like a crime. I rehearse my smiles in the mirror, swallow my disappointments, and convince myself that whatever I'm feeling can wait. After all, someone else needs me. Someone else is hurting. Someone else has a problem that seems far more important than mine.

But who do I become when the night gets quiet?

Who holds me when my strength expires?

Who notices the difference between my genuine laughter and the laughter I use to escape uncomfortable conversations? Who sees the sadness behind my carefully chosen words? Who remembers that I, too, are a human being with emotions that cannot always be tucked away neatly?

Sometimes, I wonder if people love me, or if they simply love how useful I am.

Would I still matter if I stopped being convenient?

Perhaps the saddest thing about being strong is how easily people forget that strength does not eliminate the need for tenderness.

Even the strongest person deserves to be held without having to explain why they are falling apart. Even the most dependable person deserves to be checked on without first having to announce that they are struggling. Even the person who always says the right things deserves to be listened to when they can no longer find the words.

© Winna'spen 🖋️✨
