LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN (BLOOD CANCER)

Leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues mainly the bone marrow. It causes the body to grow abnormal blood cell (usually abnormal white blood cells also known as leukocyte)

Leukocytes are cells in your blood and immune system that help protect the body from infections, bacteria, viruses and abnormal cells.

Now leukemia affects leukocytes by causing abnormal blood forming cells in the bone marrow to grow and multiply uncontrollably. These abnormal cells may not work normally and can outnumber healthy blood cells.

So in summary about leukemia, it affects the white blood cells in the body which fight against infection in the body.

CAUSES OF LEUKEMIA

The exact cause of leukemia cases is still unknown. But there are some factors known to increase the risk of having leukemia and they are:

Certain genetic conditions such as down syndrome

Smoking

High levels of ionizing radiation

Long term exposure to benzene and some other chemicals

Certain blood or bone marrow disorder

Previous chemotherapy or radiation in therapy

CAUSES OF LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN

Children are not affected by leukemia more often overall than adults. However, leukemia is the MOST common cancer in children, especially lymphoblastic leukemia (is a type of blood cancer in which the bone marrow produces too many abnormal immature cells called LYMPHOBLASTS.

Why it happens isn’t completely understood. Some important points are;

Rapid development of blood cells: children’s bone marrow is very active as their bodies grow. During rapid cell division, occasional DNA changes can occur. Rarely this changes can contribute to leukemia

Certain genetic factors: some children are born with genetic conditions that increase their risk.

Most cases are not caused by a child’s habit or anything their parents did.

Some childhood leukemia begins from genetic changes that occur before birth

Environmental factors such as high dose radiation can increase risk, but they explain only a small proportion of childhood cases.

SYMPTOMS OF LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN

Pale skin, tiredness or weakness

Fever without any serious cause

Bone or joint pain especially the legs

Poor appetite and weight loss

Swallow lymph nodes-commonly in the neck, armpit or groin

Abnormal swelling or fullness- from enlarged liver or spleen

Shortness of breath

Sometimes headaches, vomiting, or vision problem if leukemia affects the central nervous system.

HOW LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN CAN BE PREVENTED

Most childhood leukemia cannot currently be prevented because the exact causes is unknown and most children who develop it has no risk factors.

However, some steps can reduce avoidable risks:

Avoid unnecessary x-rays and CT scans

Avoid tobacco smoke around children

Reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals such as benzene, solvents, and pesticides and use appropriate protective measures when this substance are present

Attend regular medical checkups, particularly if the child has a known genetic condition that increases leukemia risk.

TREATMENT OPTION FOR LEUKEMIA IN CHILDREN

Bone marrow transplant

Targeted therapy; medicine designed to attack specific abnormalities in leukemia cells.

Immunotherapy: helps immune system recognize and attack leukemia cells

Radiation therapy: used in selected situations, such as when leukemia affect certain areas of the body or the central nervous system

Thank you for reading 😊

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
Top Engagers
For the Top Engagers Track, we award the top 3 people who engage the most with other user's content via
comments.
The winners are picked using the "Top Monthly Engagers" tab on the rankings page.
Most Engaged Content
The Most Engaged Content recognizes users whose content received the most engagement during the month.
We pick the top 3.
The winners are picked using the "Top Monthly Contributors" tab on the rankings page.
Contributor Rankings
The Rankings/Leaderboard shows the Top 20 contributors and engagers on TwoCents a monthly and all-time basis
— as well as the most active colleges (users attending/that attended those colleges)
The all-time contributors ranking is based on the Contributor Score, which is a measure of all the engagement and exposure a contributor's content receives.
The monthly contributors ranking tracks performance of a user's insights for the current month. The monthly and all-time scores are calcuated DIFFERENTLY.
This page also shows the top engagers on an all-time & monthly basis.
