Disclaimer: This content contains numerous spoilers of the series "Ordinary People". If you haven't watched it and plan on doing so, please do not read. If you can handle spoilers, hop on!

A mirage in the figurative sense means something that seems real or possible but is actually illusory. It could also work as a metaphor for false hope, deceptive appearances, or something desired but ultimately out of reach.

The series, introduces the protagonist and the viewers' eyes or whistle blower (the one who exposes the naked truth or the inner version of the seemingly ordinary residents of Mirage Estate). The viewers see the residents through the eyes of Dare, who sees them through his hacking prowess.

The first "Ordinary" couple is the Daramolas.

Pharmacists. Cool-headed. Married for six years without children. A comfortable cover-up persona for spies who want to infiltrate a community! And Oh, my God, do they deliver on their brief? Yesss!!! Yesss, they do!!!

The seemingly ordinary Daramolas are detectives on assignment to capture the terror of Lagos state, Tornado, and his wife.

Though, this is not all that they hide. This seemingly ordinary couple who are actually detectives also find it hard to tame their emotions as they occasionally engage in sexual intercourse despite Tolu (Mr. Daramola) being married with a child in the real sense.

The second couple is Tony and Mercy Appiah, the Ghanaian couple who "enjoy their company a little too much". Secretive and shy. Well, this is just the surface definition of the couple.

Beneath that timidity, they fight circumstances beyond their control. Their reality exposes the unfairness of the system.

Let me give you a little glimpse of their lives.

Mr. Tony was a bank manager in Ghana. By the looks of it, he was friendly and kept to himself, but life just had to happen to him.

He was ordered by one of his superiors to approve a loan of 850 million Cedis for a particular company and was asked to sign the approval documents. Tony innocently did as he was asked because it wasn't strange for a superior to ask his subordinate to sign on her/his behalf. The directive from the superior was also backed up with an email, which later disappeared from his inbox when needed. Turns out it was all a scam and the superior embezzled money using Tony's naivety against him, turning him to a fugitive.

Since then, he and his wife have been on the run.

The next is the gardener, Kofi. This guy embodies wickedness in human form. He appears as a man minding his business of cutting grasses but just happened to recognise Ghana's most wanted man and then the switch takes place. The blackmail begins. First, they have to split the "loot" into three. One for Mr. Appiah, one for Mrs. Appiah, and one for Our Gardener but first Mr. Appiah has to empty his account of 185k and the little change of 12k in his pocket while waiting for the big loot. Further down the line, they have to become Kofi's ATM for his betting obsession (Money na water na. Stupid guy!)

Tell me this isn't wickedness.

At the end, he meets his death at the hands of the couple as he pushes them to the edge.

Now, we introduce Emilia Daniels and Osaro (My favourite couple😔). Emilia, "the Nollywood diva and superstar" (you dey whine😌) and Osaro, her manager and husband. Such a sweet and loving guy.

On the surface, Emilia is loud, obnoxious, and always seems to lose her cool around people but there is an underlying illness. She is Bipolar. So she is scared of socialising and feels insecure. To her, people always leave because she is too much so she has learnt to relate with people at an arm's length (or whatever that idiom is).

Osaro, her husband and manager takes care of her. If she is a bomb, he is her diffuser. He goes everywhere with her and stays by her side no matter what...

Well, this "no matter what" is tested because he eventually leaves and this leads to Emilia attempting suicide by electrocution. Luckily, our eyes, Dare, saves her just in time and Osaro returns after getting the news.

The next is MC Pere and Audrey.

"The devil in disguise". Everyone has heard this saying at least 100 times in their lifetime, right? Only, not everyone has encountered a walking definition of the statement.

Well, you are all in luck because MC Pere has done us the honours by bringing this saying to life (Applause👏🏽👏🏽).

On the surface, this man is a comedian. His job is to provoke laughter from his audience. But in his home, he provokes tears and anguish as he treats his wife as a personal punching bag. MC Pere is the whole deal. Not only does he physically abuse his wife, he sexually and emotionally abuses her as well.

See the irony...

Anyways, we move on to Mr. Adebayo.

The renowned doctor and estate chairman. The man with his white hair which should connote wisdom and years of experience.

Only, he is discovered to be a predator.

This leads me to the story of Joy.

Joy. Joy. Joy.

Joy trusted Mr. Adebayo to take care of her, only to be taken advantage of.

Joy was probably in her early twenties when she met Mr. Adebayo. I just want to say that this isn't a story of a girl who met an older man who she vibes with and eventually trusted until he raped her. NO!!!! This is the story of a vulnerable girl who came to a hospital for help, discovered she was pregnant, trusted an older man to help her abort this pregnancy out of fear, and ended up taken advantage of and accidentally killed. Bottom line, they were strangers. Strangers, I say!!!

Why exactly would a person's first instinct when they see another person in desperate need of their service be smirk, licks lips, eye up to down and "Have sex with me first and then I'll help you"??

She came to him to terminate a pregnancy not to give another being life!!

So, you see. Mr. Adebayo appeared to be just another elderly doctor and chairman who cared about everyone, but he had a girl in his basement who he raped and killed because of her desperation.

Now, we move to the stars of the moment (drum roll🥁 🥁). The one!!!! and only!!!! Jonas and Luka Sommers. The Russian couple that just came back from their home country to settle in Nigeria. The owners of a bakery whose banana bread "is to die for".

These couple slice dough during the day, and butcher human flesh at night.

The sick thing about them is that the only time they seem to agree on things is when they are killing, torturing, or butchering people. What the heck??!!!

Like we are not traumatised enough, the creators of the series just had to further add to our misery by showing the viewers that this Russian couple who now appear white were once black (permit me to use) CONK Igbo people. The same Igbo people that terrorised Lagos state, Tornado and his wife (I don't think her name is mentioned throughout.) The Lion King, the King of the Creeks and his Queen.

Mehnnnn

They underwent a procedure in Russia that changed their skin to white so they could assume the identities of a particular Russian couple (who they killed) and come back to Nigeria for their son who they left with the grandmother as a baby when they fled the country some years back.

So, guys, the residents of Mirage Estate all lived as mirage.

Even our protagonist and eyes, Dare Laguda seems to be just another introverted guy but he is actually a pro-level hacker who is on a mission to seek revenge for his twin brother who was killed by Tornado. And oh yes, Dare was also a soldier who left the army due to the trauma of his dead brother and his quest for revenge.

MIRAGE. MIRAGE. MIRAGE. MIRAGE

You think you know people until you actually have a glimpse of their lives.

Hehe...who knows, maybe there is someone watching you through that tiny front camera of your phone or through those CCTVs in your home.

You never know... Maybe we all have our own Dare Laguda.

…TomiTheWordPecker.📝🐦⬛
