The first ₦50,000 I made online changed everything.

At first, it was just a Telegram group my friend added me to. People posted screenshots of huge payments, expensive phones and new clothes. They called it “plugging.” I never understood what they were doing, but I wanted in.

One night, an admin sent me a private message.

“Easy job. No experience. ₦300,000 when you're done.”

I didn't ask questions.

All I had to do was collect a package from a hotel and deliver it somewhere else. The money entered my account immediately.

After that, the jobs became bigger.

Then one Friday, I received ₦2 million.

I stared at my balance for almost ten minutes.

That was when I realised something was wrong.

I tried withdrawing the money, but my account was suddenly frozen.

Then an unknown number called.

“Check your email.”

I did.

There was one message.

SUBJECT: WE KNOW WHAT YOU DID.

Attached was a photograph of me collecting the first package.

I panicked and deleted everything—the Telegram chats, the number, even the photographs.

The next morning, there was a knock at our door.

I opened it.

Nobody was there.

Only a small brown envelope lay on the floor.

Inside was my phone.

The screen was already unlocked.

A message appeared:

“You wanted money. Now tell us how much your freedom is worth.”
