'THAT'S HOW I AM'
Listen to this Insight
A statement made by someone who has refused to see anything wrong in what they have just done, or a flaw in their character. It's quite frustrating when you speak to a friend about an act which you found offensive, and rather than apologize, they say 'that's how I am'. Maybe someone reading this, is also guilty of this act. This write up is to touch your heart enough for a change. Communication and interaction, is part of the human experience. And communication and interaction demands a degree of compromise. Most of the time, we meet new people, and would have to interact with them. These people like us, come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives of life. In order to have a civil relationship with these people, we would need to adjust certain parts of our character; just as they also should. This does not apply solely to strangers, but even among family and friends. Even in romantic relationships, there is a need to compromise and adjust bits of our character. A lot of broken relationships, would have been saved with this ability. There are certain habits that we need to unlearn and there are others we need to learn as we grow older and navigate life. Without the ability to do this, human interaction would be chaotic. When we say 'that's how I am', instead of learning from mistakes, we breed a chaotic environment around ourselves. Making it difficult for others to build some kind of relationship with us. It is not the duty of the world to adjust to our behaviour. Imagine if every man on earth, insists that all others deal with his flaws, rather than he working on them. Acknowledging our flaws, and making efforts to correct them is an important part of growth. Growth is an important part of being. Therefore refusal to correct our flaws, is an injustice to being. If someone brings to your attention certain words which you might have said, which come across as offensive; you owe it to yourself to listen and take the correction. If you are reading this, and are guilty, I implore you to make it a conscious effort to change. The 'that's how I am' mentality, makes one unpleasant and insufferable to be around. And I sincerely believe nobody loves to be known as 'that unpleasant fellow'.
