The Bunker — Episode 11

“You’re back,” I said with a smile.

She walked to her desk and moved the mouse, clicking and tapping on the keyboard. She must be trying to confirm to be sure I hadn’t touched anything, but I already deleted my activities from history and the activity log.

I stood by the door and waited for her to finish. When she finally did, she turned and went full smile again, like she hadn’t suspected something a minute ago when her face flashed to the screen and she saw that she was still logged in while she had gone to use the toilet and left me alone in the office.

“Thank you, Bree. And I’m sorry I took some time.”

“No worries,” I tell her. “It’s not like it can be helped anyway.”

She let out a small laugh and I can see the color returning to her face.

I left her office and walked just a few steps before stopping. I moved to the wall and pressed my back against it. Then I shut my eyes. My hands were trembling and my heart was hurting so bad that I can’t even breathe.

It hurts because I only realized too late what Ellis was trying to communicate to me in that small room with the guard listening in on our conversation. He had tried, but I couldn’t understand him back them. I had thought he was losing his mind, but I had been the one who was wrong.

I took a sick leave the next day and made my way to medical. On the way, I saw Jordan on the way, with one other guard by with him. The moment I passed by him, I heard laughter from the two and I turn back to see them looking at me. Jordan, especially, gave me a snicker.

I couldn’t care less about him and just continued on my way. Today is his lucky day.

“You again?” doctor Amy sighed when she sighted me walking in.

“I’m kind of sick,” I tell her and went ahead to lay on one of the empty beds.

She shook her head and came over to me. “Tell me the symptoms you are having,” she said.

I stared up at the ceiling and told her, “There’s this huge pain sitting in my heart. I thought I had let it go at first, but now it’s back, and I can’t seem to make it go away. It’s eating away at me slowly. It feels like I’m dying inside.” I turned my face to her and ask her, “Do I have a heart condition?”

Doctor Amy stared at me for a few seconds, as if trying to see which diagnosis works for me. Giving up, she said, “Okay. I’m going to call Maya to help you with whatever heart condition you are having.”

She moved away from the bed and stepped out of the room. It was suddenly quiet again. I turned my head to the other side and saw a girl not more than six, sleeping three beds away with a drip bag hung above her.

My mind soon drifted to Ellis’ secondary log and the information I saw at the end.

Subject terminated.

The authorities really killed him, and his mother, and the others too who had dared to open those gates. Every time someone dies, it’s always the same talk of an infection.

About infection…how did Alec know to report a leak at the gates? Had he intend to meet with me in the first place? Did he know I would come to him and ask about it? What was his deal?

The door soon opened and I turn my head toward the sound of footsteps.

Maya’s eyes met with mine and I wanted her to say something first because I know I had ended our last meeting badly, but she instead moved her eyes past me and walked to the bed of the little girl.

I sat up on the bed and forced myself to speak first, even though I didn’t want to.

“Are you really going to pretend you didn’t come all the way here for me?”

She didn’t answer. I left the bed and walked to stand behind her.

“Maya I—”

“There are other people who need urgent medical help. If I waste even a second on a false alarm of someone claiming to have a heart condition, it puts other people at risk. Did you even consider the minutes I spent trying to get here?”

She didn’t look at me as she said that, and her voice was very calm.

“Still, you came anyway,” I said, and somehow, I feel that answer belongs to me. It made me realize that she would still come running no matter what.

“You didn’t even wait to hear what I wanted to say,” I say as I stare at her back. She still wouldn’t look at me.

My eyes lowered to the floor and I nod my head slowly after some seconds. I raise my head back up and then slid a piece of folded note I had pulled from my pocket earlier into her coat pocket before leaving the room.

Once I shut the door, I waited outside and released a sigh. I turn to look at her again through the door glass and I see her holding the note in her hand and reading it. Then I saw her let out muffled sobs and sit on one of the beds with her palms covering her face.

The note contained everything she needed to know about Ellis, and about what I think the authorities are doing. They are killing us is what it is, and that I finally encourage the idea of escaping together again, along with the other Sector Number Three.

This time, I’m going to correct everything
