The Necklace I Bought on Impulse That Still Has Me Asking Questions

When I bought this gold-coloured necklace in 200 level, I didn't expect it to last beyond a semester.

If it lasted longer than that, I would consider myself lucky.

The funny thing is, I wasn't even shopping for jewellery. My roommates suggested we visit our neighbour, who sells jewellery under a brand called Labeyors Fashion. I went along without any intention of buying anything. I was simply there to look.

Then I noticed the necklace.

It caught my attention because of its shine and the design of the butterfly pendant. I didn't have a good necklace at the time, and the price seemed reasonable: ₦1,500. I decided to buy it, expecting to enjoy it for a while before the colour eventually began to fade.

I had no idea how wrong that expectation would be.

One day, I accidentally forgot to take it off before bathing. When I remembered, I was certain I had shortened its lifespan. I expected the colour to change or the necklace to start showing signs of wear.

Eventually, I forgot about the incident.

Months later, I took it out to wear it and noticed something strange: the colour hadn't changed.

I was surprised. I had expected the necklace to start fading by then, but it hadn't.

I've worn this necklace while sweating, spraying perfume, going to church, attending classes, running errands, going for appointments and events, and even to a job interview. It has been part of so many ordinary moments that I rarely think about how much I've put it through.

On another occasion, I lent it to a roommate, who later couldn't remember where she had kept it. We eventually found it during a cleanup, covered in dust behind her box.

After all that, I put it on again, and it was still the same necklace I remembered buying. I honestly don't know what I expected to happen to it at that point, but apparently, giving up wasn't on its agenda.

Over time, other people began to notice it too. My roommates complimented it, and two of my coursemates told me they loved it. One even said I had a good eye for jewellery.

The moment that really stayed with me, though, was when my mum admired it and said she needed a necklace of her own. She was hesitant because she worried that jewellery like that wouldn't last.

Naturally, I told her about mine.

I explained how long I'd had it and how the colour had remained unchanged despite everything it had been through. As I spoke, I realised I sounded like someone advertising a product. The difference was that I wasn't repeating a sales pitch. I was sharing my own experience.

And I think that's what has made this purchase memorable to me. I bought it without expecting much, but it continued to exceed my expectations. Something I chose on an ordinary day became an accessory I trusted, a piece people noticed, and a product I could genuinely recommend based on my experience.

It reminded me that a good purchase isn't always about how much money you spend. Sometimes, it's about how well something serves you long after you've stopped expecting anything special from it.

Now, there's still one question I haven't answered.

Is this necklace actually gold?

I haven't taken it to a jeweller, so I can't claim that it is real gold. All I know is that it is gold-coloured, it cost me ₦1,500, and it has lasted far longer than I expected.

A special mention to Labeyors Fashion, where I bought it. I may have gone there without intending to buy anything, but I left with something that has lasted far longer than I expected and given me a story worth telling.

Now, I'm genuinely curious: would you trust a necklace that has survived all this, or would you take it to a jeweller to solve the mystery?

Because if the jeweller tells me it's not gold, I'll have to accept that this necklace has been doing an excellent job of pretending. And if it turns out to be real gold, I'll be looking for that neighbour again. This time, I'm not going there just to look.
