THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AND NO ONE PANICKED

I don't remember the date. But I remember the darkness.

My dad was a workaholic. Always travelling. That was his way of loving us working hard so we could have the best schools, the best life. He believed his daughters deserved everything.

His last trip was to Dubai. When he came back, we thought we had more time. We had just one month with him. Just one.

That night NEPA took light like they always did. But this night was different. Nobody shouted "NEPA!" Nobody complained.

My dad lit a small lantern. And he started dancing. That was his thing dancing anyhow just to make us laugh. We all sat on the floor in the parlor that night. Just us. No phones. No light. Just laughing at his dance.

He looked at me and called me "My Favourite." That was his name for me. Only me.

I didn't know that would be one of the last times we would all be complete.

If I knew that was the last month, I would have stayed longer on that floor. I would have watched him dance longer. I would have hugged him tighter.

The day they told us "we are sorry, we lost him" the world became unbalanced. Dark clouds hovered over our house for a long time.

How can someone so full of life just not be there again?

What breaks me every day is this: He worked so hard for us to go to the best schools, to have the best life. But you never saw us graduate. He will never see the women we are becoming. He is not here to see how much I miss him.

And that pain never leaves.

His last words to us were "be united, because with unity nothing can break you." We are trying, daddy. We are trying to stay united like you said.

If you are reading this and you still have your dad, your mum, your person please. Tonight when the lights go off, don't panic. Sit on the floor. Listen to their stories. Watch them dance that silly dance. Let them call you their favourite.

Because you don't know which night is the last night you will all be complete.

And when they are gone, you will give anything to have one more night in the dark with them.

I miss you, daddy. Your Favourite misses you. Every day. And deeply.
