The Road To Umuadike: Departure
<p>Chapter 9</p><p>Departure </p><p><br/></p><p>The morning air was heavy with anticipation and unease. News had spread through Umuadike that Chijioke would leave the village for the city. He had secured a position assisting a merchant who traveled along the new road, carrying goods to distant towns.</p><p><br/></p><p>Some villagers celebrated his opportunity; others whispered about abandoning tradition.</p><p><br/></p><p>Elder Ikenna called a meeting under the iroko tree. His voice was calm but carried weight.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Chijioke leaves,” he said, “not because we are weak, but because the world calls him. Let him go, but let us remember who we are.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Chijioke approached Nnamdi, Mama Ifeoma, and even Papa Ugo. Each said words of advice, encouragement, and—sometimes—mild warning.</p><p><br/></p><p>“I will write,” Chijioke promised, “and when I return, I will bring what is useful. But do not fear the road, Father Ikenna. It is only a path.”</p><p><br/></p><p>Elder Ikenna nodded slowly. “A path is neither good nor bad, only its travelers decide.”</p><p><br/></p><p>The departure stirred emotions. Children cried, women waved, and some men looked away, pretending not to feel the loss. The market seemed quieter, the school smaller. Even Papa Ugo sat in silence, unusually thoughtful.</p><p><br/></p><p>Chijioke’s journey along the dusty new road was slow. He looked back at the familiar roofs of Umuadike and wondered whether he would ever feel the same about the village as before.</p><p><br/></p><p>But for those left behind, life continued. The road remained, traders arrived, the school still gathered children, and the market continued to hum with coins and gossip. The village had changed, and no one could pretend otherwise.</p><p><br/></p><p>That evening, Elder Ikenna whispered as he watched the sun set behind the hills:</p><p><br/></p><p>“Departure teaches patience.
