I need you to tell me the truth.”</p><p><br/></p><p>He sat quietly, staring at the photograph in my hands.</p><p><br/></p><p>Kemi stood beside the window, while Aunty Ronke remained seated.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Your mother made me promise,” Daddy finally said.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Promise what?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“To raise you as my own and never let you feel different from the other children.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I frowned.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Why would I feel different?”</p><p><br/></p><p>Daddy took a deep breath.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Because I am not your biological father, Teni.”</p><p><br/></p><p>The room went silent.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Then who is my father?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“His name was Samuel. He was Aunty Ronke's younger brother. He died before you were old enough to know him.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I turned towards Aunty Ronke.</p><p><br/></p><p>She was already crying.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Your mother, Sade, and Samuel were involved before you were born. After Samuel died, Sade couldn't raise you alone. Your mother took you in.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I stared at him.</p><p><br/></p><p>“So Mama wasn't my biological mother?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“She was your aunt. But she loved you as her own.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I looked at Kemi.</p><p><br/></p><p>“Did you know?”</p><p><br/></p><p>“I knew Mama helped Sade leave in 2009. I knew she was hiding something, but I didn't know the full truth.”</p><p><br/></p><p>I couldn't process everything.</p><p><br/></p><p>Just then, my phone vibrated.</p><p><br/></p><p>It was Damilare.</p><p><br/></p><p>*Please, Teni. I think it's time I told you what I know.*</p><p><br/></p><p>I stared at the message.</p><p><br/></p><p>What else could possibly be hidden from me?</p><p><br/></p>
