THE WOMAN WHO HEARD THE SILENCE

At 2:17 a.m., someone screamed for help.

Then came the sound of breaking glass.

Then silence.

Twenty-three minutes later, the police arrived at the house of Emeka Dike, a wealthy businessman known for his construction companies.

The front door was locked.

The windows were locked.

There was no sign of forced entry.

Yet Emeka was dead.

He lay beside his dining table with a single stab wound in his chest.

His expensive wristwatch was still on his hand.

His wallet was untouched.

Nothing valuable appeared to be missing.

Detective Inspector Nneka Okoye entered the room.

She didn't immediately look at the body.

She looked at the room.

The overturned chair.

The broken glass.

The wall clock.

The curtains.

The carpet.

Then she asked quietly:

“Who found him?”

A woman near the kitchen raised her hand.

“I did.”

“Name?”

“Blessing. I'm his housekeeper.”

“When?”

“A little after 2:20.”

“What happened?”

“I heard shouting and something breaking. I came inside and found him.”

Nneka looked down.

Blessing's shoes were wet.

But there were no wet footprints leading into the house.

Nneka looked toward the window.

Rain was falling heavily outside.

“You said you came from outside?”

“Yes.”

“Then why are your shoes wet but the floor isn't?”

Blessing's face changed.

“I… I don't know.”

Nneka said nothing.

She walked toward the body.

“Photograph everything before anyone touches it.”

A forensic officer began taking pictures.

Nneka noticed Emeka's right hand was tightly closed.

The fingers were carefully opened.

Inside was a small piece of black fabric.

“Bag it.”

Then she noticed the wall clock.

It had stopped at 2:03 a.m.

“Was this clock working before tonight?”

The housekeeper nodded.

“Yes.”

Nneka looked at the broken glass.

Then the clock.

Then the body.

Something didn't fit.

“Check the security cameras.”

An officer returned several minutes later.

“Ma'am, the cameras stopped recording at 1:56.”

“Why?”

“We're checking.”

Nneka walked to the security room.

The system wasn't damaged.

Someone had simply switched it off.

She examined the controls.

Whoever did it knew exactly what they were doing.

Then she noticed something behind the bookshelf.

A second mobile phone.

It belonged to Emeka.

There was only one message on it.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STOPPED DIGGING.

Nneka stared at the screen.

“What was he digging into?”

She searched his office.

Inside a locked drawer, she found dozens of documents.

Millions of naira had been transferred between several construction companies.

The payments were supposedly for building projects.

But some of those projects didn't exist.

Others had never been completed.

Nneka immediately understood.

Someone was stealing money through fake contracts.

Emeka had discovered it.

And someone had warned him to stay quiet.

Then she found another note.

Six words.

THE PERSON CLOSEST TO ME KNOWS.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Inspector Okoye.”

A man's voice spoke softly.

“Stop investigating Emeka Dike's death.”

“Who are you?”

“You have three days.”

“Three days for what?”

“To forget.”

The call ended.

Nneka smiled slightly.

“Wrong officer.”

Her colleague stared at her.

“What?”

“He just told me I'm close.”

That evening, Nneka reviewed the security records again.

Then she noticed something unusual.

A guard's report showed that Daniel Eze, one of the private security officers, had left the compound at 1:30 a.m.

But another document showed him entering the house at 1:47.

Nneka searched his identity.

Daniel Eze didn't exist.

His identification number belonged to another man.

She searched deeper.

His fingerprints matched a suspect arrested six years earlier for financial fraud.

His real name was Samuel Obi.

Nneka immediately ordered officers to find him.

But Samuel was already watching her.

That night, Nneka left the police station.

As she approached her car, she noticed a black vehicle across the street.

The engine was running.

She entered her car.

The black vehicle moved.

Nneka started her engine.

The vehicle followed.

She turned left.

It followed.

She turned again.

Still following.

Then the passenger window of the black vehicle opened.

A gun appeared.

BANG!

The bullet shattered Nneka's rear window.

She accelerated.

Another shot hit the car door.

Nneka drove into a crowded market, forcing the attackers to slow down.

The black vehicle disappeared.

She stopped near a police checkpoint.

Her hands were shaking.

But she wasn't afraid.

She was angry.

Someone had just tried to kill a police investigator in the middle of an active murder investigation.

That meant the case was bigger than she thought.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

A message.

COME TO THE OLD RAILWAY WAREHOUSE. COME ALONE.

No name.

No explanation.

Nneka stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO KILLED EMEKA, COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

She knew it was probably a trap.

But she also knew something else.

The killer was getting nervous.

Nneka loaded her weapon.

She drove toward the warehouse.

She didn't know that Samuel Obi was already waiting inside.

And he wasn't alone.

As Nneka stepped through the warehouse door, the lights suddenly went out.

A voice whispered from the darkness:

“Inspector Okoye…”

She raised her weapon.

The voice continued:

“You've been investigating the wrong murder.”

Then a gunshot exploded through the darkness.

TO BE CONTINUED…

At the end of the month, we give out prizes in 3 categories: Best Content, Top Engagers and
Most Engaged Content.
Best Content
Top Engagers
Most Engaged Content
Best Content
We give out cash prizes to between 7 and 20 community members with the best insights in the past month.
The winners are picked by an in-house selection process.
The winners are NOT picked from the leaderboards/rankings, we choose winners based on the quality, originality
and insightfulness of their content.
Here are a few other things to know for the Best Content track
1
Quality over Quantity — You stand a higher chance of winning by publishing a few really good insights across the entire month,
rather than a lot of low-quality, spammy posts.
2
Share original, authentic, and engaging content that clearly reflects your voice, thoughts, and opinions.
3
Avoid using AI to generate content—use it instead to correct grammar, improve flow, enhance structure, and boost clarity.
4
Explore audio content—high-quality audio insights can significantly boost your chances of standing out.
5
Use eye-catching cover images—if your content doesn't attract attention, it's less likely to be read or engaged with.
6
Share your content in your social circles to build engagement around it.
