WHAT I FELT WAS LOVE

CHAPTER ONE— The Beginning of Everything

The first time Amara saw Daniel, she didn't think anything of him.

That was the funny thing about beginnings.

They rarely looked important when they happened.

Sometimes, a moment that would later become the beginning of an entire chapter of your life simply looked like an ordinary Tuesday afternoon.

The school courtyard was unusually noisy that day.

Students moved in different directions, some rushing toward their next lecture, others gathered beneath the trees, laughing and discussing everything from upcoming tests to weekend plans.

Amara sat beneath her favourite tree with a book open on her lap.

She wasn't reading.

She had been staring at the same page for almost ten minutes.

"You're doing it again."

Amara looked up.

Favour stood in front of her, holding two bottles of water.

"Doing what?"

"Staring at a book like it's going to write your examination for you."

Amara laughed.

"Maybe it will."

"Then introduce me."

Favour dropped beside her and handed her one of the bottles.

The two girls had been friends for years. Favour knew Amara's moods almost as well as she knew her own.

She knew when Amara was happy.

She knew when she was pretending to be happy.

And, unfortunately for Amara, she knew when Amara was trying to hide something.

"So..." Favour began.

Amara immediately became suspicious.

"So what?"

"Nothing."

"Favour."

"I'm just saying."

"Saying what?"

Favour tilted her head toward the other side of the courtyard.

"That boy has been looking this way for the past five minutes."

Amara refused to turn around.

"Which boy?"

"The one pretending to be busy with his phone."

"Maybe he's actually busy."

"Amara."

"What?"

"You're terrible at pretending not to be interested."

"I'm not interested."

Favour smiled.

"I didn't say you were."

Amara finally glanced over.

And that's when she saw him.

Daniel.

He was standing with two of his friends near the staircase, laughing about something.

For a second, their eyes met.

Amara quickly looked away.

Her heart gave a strange little jump.

She frowned at herself.

"See?" Favour whispered.

"See what?"

"You looked."

"I looked because you told me to look."

"Exactly."

Amara rolled her eyes.

"Please leave me alone."

Favour laughed.

But neither of them knew that Daniel had noticed the exchange.

And neither of them knew that, from that afternoon onward, their lives would slowly begin to intertwine.

---

The following morning, Amara arrived early.

She preferred quiet mornings.

Before the noise.

Before the endless conversations.

Before everyone had a reason to need something from someone.

She was walking toward her classroom when someone called her name.

"Amara."

She stopped.

Daniel stood a few steps behind her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"You're Amara, right?"

She nodded.

"You know my name?"

He smiled.

"Favour talks loudly."

Amara laughed.

"That's true."

"I've actually wanted to talk to you."

"Why?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know. You just seem different."

Amara raised an eyebrow.

"Different how?"

"I haven't figured that out yet."

There was something about the way he said it that made her smile.

Not because it was particularly romantic.

Because it sounded honest.

They walked toward the classroom together.

They talked about school.

Books.

Music.

Their favourite subjects.

Their least favourite teachers.

Nothing important.

And yet, by the time Amara reached her classroom, she had already forgotten most of what they had discussed.

She remembered only one thing.

His smile.

---

Their friendship grew quietly.

Daniel began sitting with Amara and Favour during breaks.

He sent funny messages whenever Amara was having a stressful day.

He remembered that she hated overly sweet drinks.

He noticed when she was unusually quiet.

And whenever she asked how he knew something about her, he would simply shrug.

"I pay attention."

Those words stayed with her.

I pay attention.

Amara had always wanted someone who paid attention.

Someone who noticed the little things.

So when Daniel began doing exactly that, she started believing that perhaps she had finally found someone who understood her.

She didn't realize that there was a difference between being noticed and being truly known.

She would learn that later.

Much later.

---

One Friday afternoon, the four of them sat outside after school.

Favour was talking about an argument she'd had with one of her classmates.

Daniel was laughing.

Amara watched him.

There was something peaceful about the moment.

For once, everything felt simple.

No pressure.

No expectations.

Just friendship.

Then Daniel looked at her.

"What?"

Amara blinked.

"Nothing."

"You've been looking at me."

"No, I haven't."

Favour immediately interrupted.

"She has."

"Favour!"

Everyone laughed.

Amara covered her face.

Daniel smiled.

And in that moment, something changed.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just enough for Amara to notice.

She was beginning to care.

---

That night, Amara lay on her bed staring at her phone.

A message appeared.

Daniel: You got home safely?

She smiled.

Amara: Yes. You?

His reply came almost immediately.

Daniel: I'm home. Goodnight, Amara.

She stared at the message.

Then typed:

Goodnight.

She placed the phone beside her.

Five seconds later, she picked it up again.

She reread the conversation.

Then smiled at herself.

"What's wrong with me?" she whispered.

She didn't know.

She only knew that something about Daniel made ordinary moments feel extraordinary.

And she mistook that feeling for certainty.

For safety.

For love.

---

Weeks passed.

Their friendship became closer.

Daniel became the person Amara spoke to when she was excited.

When she was angry.

When she was confused.

When she simply had nothing to say.

And Amara became the person Daniel called whenever he needed someone to listen.

But there were things he never told her.

Things about his past.

Things about his family.

Things about another person who occasionally appeared in his messages and disappeared whenever Amara asked about her.

Amara noticed.

Of course she noticed.

But she didn't ask too many questions.

She trusted him.

At least, she thought she did.

One afternoon, while Daniel was away, Favour sat beside Amara.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Do you like him?"

Amara became quiet.

"Daniel?"

"Who else?"

Amara looked down at her hands.

"I don't know."

Favour smiled softly.

"You do."

Amara sighed.

"Maybe."

"Have you told him?"

"No."

"Why?"

"I don't want to ruin what we have."

Favour studied her face.

"Then don't rush it."

Amara nodded.

But somewhere inside her, she had already begun imagining a future she had never discussed with Daniel.

That was the danger.

She wasn't falling in love with what they were.

She was beginning to fall in love with what she imagined they could become.

---

A month later, Daniel finally said the words Amara had secretly been waiting to hear.

They were standing beneath the same tree where she and Favour had first noticed him.

"I like you," he said.

Amara's heart raced.

She smiled.

"I like you too."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Daniel reached for her hand.

Amara allowed him to hold it.

The moment was simple.

But to her, it meant everything.

She thought she had finally found love.

She didn't know that some stories begin with happiness only to teach us a painful truth.

She didn't know that the person who made her feel most special would eventually become the person who made her question herself.

She didn't know about the secrets.

She didn't know about the unanswered questions.

She didn't know about the message Daniel would receive months later that would change everything.

And she certainly didn't know that Favour already suspected something was wrong.

Because while Amara was looking at Daniel and imagining forever...

Favour was looking at Daniel and wondering:

"What are you hiding?"

And that was where the real story began.

I can't believe I unlocked a romantic novel, well it has warnings 😊
