Equal Rights, But Who’s Paying for Dinner?
Equal Rights, But Who’s Paying for Dinner?
Equal Rights, But Who’s Paying for Dinner?
Drop the word “feminism” in any Nigerian group chat, family meeting or timeline, and watch the place catch fire.

One side says: this was never about drama. It’s about survival. Women in Nigeria are fighting for basic safety, for respect at work, and to stop being treated as unpaid domestic staff in their own homes. To them, feminism is simply equality: the right to be safe, heard and treated with dignity.

The other side says: what plays out online looks less like equality and more like selective equality. Demand independence like the West, but still expect men to pay the bills, open the doors and play provider. To them, the movement has become a gender war fuelled by online clout instead of solving real problems.

And feminists fire back: asking for safety and respect doesn’t cancel kindness or culture. “Who pays for dinner” isn’t the fight. Not being harassed, underpaid or silenced is.

So who’s right?

Is Nigerian feminism a fight for basic human rights, or has it lost the plot somewhere between the street and the timeline?

Pick your side, defend it, and tell us: where do you draw the line?
