The Discipline Debate

The Discipline Debate

Bring up childhood memories in any Nigerian gathering, and within five minutes people are laughing about being beaten with koboko, wire, turning sticks, or slippers for making a simple mistake.

One camp swears by "spare the rod and spoil the child," arguing that strict physical discipline kept our generation respectful, resilient, and grounded, while modern "gentle parenting" is raising fragile, entitled kids who talk back to elders.

The opposing camp argues that most of those beatings had nothing to do with correction, they were just financially stressed, emotionally unregulated parents taking their anger out on helpless children.

They argue that physical punishment doesn't teach morals; it only teaches kids how to lie better, hide their mistakes, and fear the people who are supposed to protect them.

Where do you stand? Is abandoning the cane destroying childhood discipline, or is "gentle parenting" finally breaking a generational curse of normalized abuse?
