“A Childhood They Never Chose

Sometimes, I look at the children on the streets and my heart quietly breaks.

I see them under the hot sun, walking from one car to another, carrying things that look too heavy for their little bodies. I see them knocking on windows, asking strangers to buy something from them.

And I wonder...

When was the last time someone told them, “You don't have to worry. I've got you”?

When was the last time they slept without worrying about tomorrow?

When was the last time they ate until they were full?

When was the last time they laughed like children without having to think about money?

They are so young, yet, life has already forced them to understand things children should never have to understand.

While some children are at home complaining about food they don't like, another child is praying for just one meal.

While some children are complaining about going to school, another child is watching them pass by and wishing, “I wish that was me.”

And that's what hurts.

They didn't ask for this life.

They didn't choose to be born poor.

They didn't choose to spend their childhood on the streets.

They were just born into circumstances they couldn't control.

Sometimes I wish we could see what is behind those little faces.

Maybe there is a child who dreams of becoming a doctor.

Maybe another dreams of becoming a teacher.

Maybe there is a brilliant mind out there, carrying a dream that is slowly fading—not because the dream wasn't big enough, but because nobody gave the child a chance.

So the next time you see a child on the street, don't just see someone trying to sell you something.

See a child

See a child who deserves to be loved.

And I hope that one day, these children will no longer have to stand under the burning sun, asking the world to notice them.

I hope they get the chance to put down whatever they are carrying, go to school, come home safely, eat a warm meal and simply be children.
