A Piece of Peace

I don't have everything but stored up somewhere in my heart that is now learning how to stay quiet, is a piece of peace. As a grown-up and someone who, as a matter of unarguable fact, is still growing, I have come to the unbending truth that peace — and absolutely nothing else — is the truest quest; something many don't even know they need.

Adulthood snuck up on our unsuspecting childhood and plunged us into a reality that is no different from a war because, tell me, what difference is there between the life of trying to make ends meet — which never meet by the way — and fighting for either survival or victory?

This daily grind — one that requires us to fearlessly have a face-off with the monstrous hustle and bustle of the blood-draining, life-sucking world of the corporate and business world — most often than not removes us far away from that absolutely tranquil state of being unbothered. For accomplishing one task only but introduces us to the next. Adulthood: a long line of waiting Goliaths.

The psychological implications of unaccomplished goals and unlived dreams have finally made the ever-golden truth in John 10:10 a reality that is blindingly bright because, truly, the thief has succeeded in not only stealing and killing, but daily destroying whatever peace we might have had. If one could peep into one's mind to see it for what it is, I wouldn't be shocked if the sight is a clutter of nagging concerns demanding attention, a room full of toddlers each crying at the top of their voices because they just want to go home.

Sadly, peace is a fading memory for many people for they have mastered a life that constantly requires them to stay caught up in smashing goals. Even when they arrive at a certain point of success, they hardly allow themselves to enjoy the prize of triumph, which again is that piece of peace.

Peace finds expression in various forms; one of which is the rarest quality of knowing what is enough. The adult is trapped in the prison of wanting more, amassing more. No matter what someone has — economic status regardless — they still want more. Why? There's a fear that what is available may not be enough to combat the unexpected unknown lurking somewhere around the corner. And where there is fear, peace is an absent foreigner.

But this piece of peace is a teacher teaching my stubborn heart to enjoy the daily bread I have been so graciously given for tomorrow will take care of itself. For as a child knows without a scintilla of doubt that his father would provide, I also school my heart to stay in grateful contentment for what I have — a delicious piece of peace.
