“Arsiers.”

My name.

“Arsiers.”

I heard my name again in the midst of my struggles, ’cause it felt like the people around me were working against me.

“Take a deep breath, Arsiers. You can do this.”

The maiden’s voice.

Fear.

I could hear fear speaking through her voice.

“Push!”

There were too many voices in my head, too many voices around me. I tried to open my eyes. I couldn’t.

“Panic!”

What did I mean? I was already panicking.

“God, help me.”

What was happening?

I tried again. I forced my eyelids open. They were so heavy. God, so heavy.

I was weak. So weak.

My lids couldn’t cooperate. My body was on a serious lockdown, like it no longer belonged to me.

Then came the pain.

“Pain!”

“Aaarghhh!”

The cry tore out of me, immediate and sharp, like a woman fighting for her life.

My waist felt unbearably heavy. Something seemed to be pulling at me from within, dragging everything downward. I cried, tears pouring down my cheeks, hot and helpless.

My stomach twisted.

I couldn’t breathe properly.

I felt like I was going to die.

“Help me.”

The words spilled from my mouth, my voice raspy and broken, like a woman in labour.

“She’s gained consciousness!”

The woman screamed immediately.

“What’s happening here?”

Another voice.

This one was different.

A man’s voice.

I knew it.

“Aargh!”

The pain came again, harder this time.

My waist. My stomach.

I was being torn apart from the inside.

I finally forced my eyes open.

And then I understood.

“God... I was in labour!”
