ADAM'S WORTH

Chapter 3:

〜꒪✧◝(⁰ 。◕◕。DAWN BREAK。◕◕。 ⁰)◜✧꒪〜

“Run!!!” “Run!!” “Run!!” “She’s a monster!”

The screams of flailing men echoed around me. Battered and torn bodies lay scattered across the ground before me. Blood. Torn pieces of flesh. Guts. The smell was shit, so rancid it seemed to cling to the back of my throat.

The atmosphere was tense, suffocatingly heated. The whole building felt as though it were burning, or was it only my own body?

The walls were splattered with blood, the once-golden walls painted crimson. Intestines hung from torn-open men, their guts spilling onto the floor.

My head spun. I was dizzy. My chest felt heavy, and I was drenched in sweat. My mouth was filled with saliva mixed with blood.

It tasted good.

The blood.

Was I crazy?

“Uuurggh…”

I was about to barf when a cool breeze drifted by.

My skin became ice-cold. Shivers ran from my spine through my entire body. Goosebumps rose across my skin, the cold creeping upward until it reached my neck.

It was getting close to dawn.

Then, almost immediately, my body heated up again, beginning from within and spreading outward.

What was this?

Could I already feel winter approaching before it had even begun?

Thump. Thump. Thump.

I could hear them coming.

So many men.

My father’s men.

They were coming to get me.

I had no idea what to do, so I panicked. I rose to my feet. I had already changed back to my form.Naked . and looked towards the window.

I wanted my child.

I wanted to see him so badly.

I needed to.

I was heart-stricken. What could I do?

I wanted my baby.

I was hurt. So terribly hurt, from the inside to the outside.

Wait.

“What?!”

I gasped as I searched myself.

The wounds were gone.

I stared at my body, speechless. Then I looked beside me, towards the wall.

One of the midwives who had assisted with my child’s birth lay there dead and torn apart. Her guts spilled onto the floor, her intestines destroyed. It was a sight no one should have to behold.

And there I was, staring at her corpse.

Guilt rose from my gut to my throat. My stomach churned violently. Tears rolled down my cheeks.

What have I done?

Marching footsteps approached.

There was no time for this.

A halt.

They were all staring at me.

At first, there was fear in their faces.

Then their expressions changed into something I could scarcely name.

Hatred.

Darkness.

Revenge.

God help me.

I’m so done.

They had already reached the door.

The men parted.

I was confused.

Were they parting for me?

Thank you.

I wanted to say it.

Thank God the words did not spill from my mouth, for it would have been to my shame. I would have had to live with it forever.

Then the man came through, holding a baby.

“Aaargh!”

My heart dropped.

I was consumed by the sight.

I opened my mouth.

“Father… can I see my child?”

He looked at me with disgust.

His features were stern, as always. His eyebrows twitched, his eyes seeming to pierce straight through me, while his mouth twisted as though muttering words beneath his breath.

Even his gaze made me shiver. There was something in the way he looked at me that made my skin crawl.

He was a very tall man, huge in stature, with great biceps any woman could fall for.

And he was impatient.

“Take out her heart,” he said. “That is the only way to kill this beast.”

Immediately, my father turned away.

The woman turned with him.

She had appeared beside my father so quietly that I had hardly noticed her. She wore a red gown that flowed all the way to the ground, covering every part of her. Even her face was concealed beneath a scarf, leaving only her eyes exposed.

Green eyes.

That was what made the whole outfit look so mismatched. Red gown, covered face, and those strangely vivid green eyes staring out from beneath the scarf.

She clearly had no sense of fashion.

What was I thinking?

God, I was about to die.

Was I a beast?

The thought struck me suddenly, directly.

Was I a beast?

Was I truly capable of this?

She and my father disappeared between the men.

“Wait!” I shouted. “Please, let me see him one time. Let me touch him. Just once!”

I cried, screaming at the top of my voice. My voice cracked. I was in so much pain.

My heart broke.

“Help,” I whispered. “Help, please.”

I wasn’t going to die.

Not here.

Never.

I was getting my child.

My baby.

The men advanced.

As they moved, they tread warily. The cold wind came again. I could feel it against my skin, across my face.

The window!

I could make it through there.

But this building was five stories high.

Am I going to make it?

Let’s find out.

I knew it was crazy, considering the fact that I could heal. Perhaps I would repair myself eventually, if this new power was in my favour.

Adrenaline rushed through me immediately. It spiked.

I lunged for the window.

I could hardly believe myself.

My legs moved too fast.

This was beyond being human.

The men, already alert, ran towards me.

But I was gone.

Already gone.

Through the window.
