ADAM'S WORTH

ᕦ ~ •́⊙෴BREAKING DAWN෴⊙•̀ ~ ᕤ

Chapter 4:

My vision was blurred.

Blur was all I could see.

Air. Rushing wind against my face. My body was surrendered to it, carried mercilessly through the cold.

My hair whipped violently behind me, while the chill gnawed against my naked skin.

Then came the memories.

They crashed through my mind in fragments.

One moment, I was in the air.

The next, I was upon the ground.

Then came darkness.

It called to me.

No.

It did not call.

It swallowed me whole.

I forced my eyes open.

Dizziness overwhelmed me at once. My head felt unbearably heavy, pulsing with such violent pain that it seemed as though someone were hammering against my skull from every direction at once.

I stared upwards.

The ceiling was unfamiliar.

Mine had been crafted like a mirror, adorned with golden whorls that twisted in circular patterns and seemed to move whenever the eyes wandered across them. They reflected the viewer in a strange, distorted manner, as though the glass itself possessed a life of its own.

But this ceiling was different.

So very different.

Intricate patterns sprawled across it, disappearing into a vast, hollow darkness. It seemed impossibly high, stretching upwards into somewhere my eyes could not reach.

Was I hallucinating?

A strange sound drew my attention.

The sound of water being wrung from a cloth into a basin.

I tried to turn my head towards it.

I couldn't.

Even the smallest movement sent pain crawling through me.

My breathing came in shallow gasps, each breath seeming to catch somewhere deep within my chest.

“Your lungs were damaged.”

The voice belonged to an elderly man.

“What?” I tried to say.

The word barely escaped my lips.

“But, miraculously, you healed.”

There was amusement in his voice.

“Interesting…”

“What do you mean?” I forced the question from my throat.

“Shush. Take it easy on yourself. You barely survived before young Master found you.”

I attempted to tilt my head, but even that proved impossible.

I was wrapped in bandages from head to toe. Beneath them, I could feel the miserable state of my body. Every part of me seemed fractured, bruised, or simply beyond repair.

I must have lost a considerable amount of blood.

“You creatures never cease to amaze me,” the old man continued. “I'm no longer surprised by anything. I can't even be when something appears out of the ordinary.”

He paused.

“Because I've seen things.”

I tried to focus on his words.

What in the heavens is he talking about?

“Young Master will be here soon. You need only wait a few more days…”

His voice drifted for a moment.

“I think you'll be healed by then. You've been here for over a week.”

Over a week?

Should I have been surprised?

Perhaps.

But I had thrown myself from an entire castle and somehow remained alive.

At this point, my definition of impossible had become rather flexible.

“I'll go fetch Young Master for you.”

His footsteps gradually faded until silence reclaimed the room.
