And Yet.
<p style="text-align: justify;">He struck her hard across the cheek.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">My stomach churned. My fists clenched as I watched her fall to the ground. I shifted helplessly on my knees, frozen between fear and the desperate urge to do something.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">“Daddy, please.”</p><p style="text-align: justify;">She groaned in pain and looked me in the eye.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I rose almost immediately, desperate to find help.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Those were the last words I ever said to him after he left.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">To jail.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He stayed there.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">One week.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Two weeks.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He finally called.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">“Help me beg your mother.”</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Two weeks. Two days.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">My heart clenched the longer he stayed there. I felt guilty for leaving him in jail, like he didn't deserve it.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Why couldn't I hate him?</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I went to my mother. I didn't know what to say.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Family members had begged her.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Promises had been made.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I knew nothing would be enough.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He drew the line when he touched her.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">And yet.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Here I was, with the prospect of begging.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">“Mummy, please.”</p><p style="text-align: justify;">She looked at me.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Her eyes were still swollen from the bruise.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">“He has signed the restraining order. He's not coming back. Ever again.”</p><p style="text-align: justify;">A soft smile graced her lips.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I smiled back.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Time passed, and I never saw him again.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I spoke to him on the phone.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He still sounded like the father who bought me a bicycle for topping my class.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He still sounded like the man who took care of me.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He still sounded like the man who held my hand when I failed my pageantry.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">But this version had another woman.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The same woman he had come to beat my mother for.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">And yet—</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I couldn't hate him.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I hated myself for it.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">I still prayed for him.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">A silent part of me, looking for his redemption.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">But deep down, I knew.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">He had no redemption.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">The thought of anything happening to him broke my heart.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">What is wrong with me?</p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br/></p>
