BEYOND THE ACCIDENT

GOOD AFTERNOON, MY PEOPLE

Something happened yesterday evening that's still baffling me till now

An accident occurred yesterday evening in an area I happened to pass through while going to repair my phone

Actually, I was still a bit far from where the accident happened, but I could see a crowd gathered around a particular spot

Out of curiosity, I kept looking towards the scene as I approached

What actually happened was that a young guy riding a ladies' bike hit a little child. I honestly couldn't tell whether the child was a boy or a girl

By the time I got to the exact scene, the child had already been rushed to a nearby school clinic for treatment. Thank God the accident happened close to a school that had a clinic

Omoh, the scene wasn't a pleasant one at all

There was blood on the floor, and I could hear people making different comments. Some were even asking

"Shey omo yen ma yรจ bayi?" (Will that child survive?)

Apparently, there was a ceremony taking place around that area, so I assumed the child might have accompanied their parents to the ceremony

From what I gathered, the young man was riding his bike at high speed and couldn't control it when he got to where the child was

People gathered around the scene, and some even started beating the bike rider

Now, this brings me to the question I really want us to discuss

WHO IS REALLY TO BLAME IN THIS KIND OF SITUATION?

Let's look at it from different angles

1. The bike rider: Obviously, he has a huge responsibility here. Knowing that there was a ceremony and people were gathered around, he should have reduced his speed and been more careful. Riding at a speed he couldn't control was extremely dangerous.

2. The child: Could the child have suddenly run onto the road or attempted to cross without looking? I honestly don't know what the child was doing on the road when the accident happened. But then, can we really place the blame on a little child who might not fully understand the dangers of the road?

3. The parents: Could the parents also have some responsibility? If they brought the child to the ceremony, shouldn't someone have been watching over the child to ensure they didn't wander onto the road?

Now, I'm not saying any of these possibilities is an excuse for what happened. I'm just trying to look at the situation from different perspectives

And let me bring something else into this discussion

This happened around my school, AAUA, Akungba

Honestly, the way some drivers, especially bike riders, ride around here is quite alarming. Some ride as though nothing can possibly go wrong

I shouldn't lie, at some point, I actually started feeling sorry for the guy

Yes, he might have been responsible for the accident, but does that mean people should take matters into their own hands and beat him?

Nobody seemed to care whether he was injured too. Nobody seemed to care about what could happen to him

And I started thinking...

What if, in the accident, something worse happened and he lost his life?

Wouldn't that create another serious problem? Who would then be held responsible?

Does the fact that someone has caused an accident mean they should be denied help or subjected to mob action?

Don't get me wrong, the child's life is equally important, and I sincerely pray that the child survives and recovers fully

Seeing the blood on the floor myself was heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜ข

I honestly feel sorry for everyone involved, especially the innocent child

But I want us to look beyond our emotions for a moment

My question is: Should the blame rest entirely on the bike rider, or should the parents' supervision and other circumstances surrounding the accident also be considered?

And more importantly, was beating the rider the right thing to do?

I know the bike rider has a huge responsibility, but are we supposed to blame only him?

I'd really love to hear your honest thoughts on this
