Caged Princess

She withdraws not out of anger but of fear,

Because somehow silence became safety.

At least the voice of criticism died down

When she said she's fine

With tears in her eyes.

Yet in the dark of night,

Her sobs are louder than a baby's cry.

Not because she chose to lie,

But it's a method she had to adopt

As a kid just to adapt.

Because speaking out was futile.

"Let there just be peace," the voices rang.

So instead, she shrank.

And when you say, "I love you,"

It doesn't come with butterflies in her belly.

It sounds like a tale as old as time.

It sounds like a cheap lie

Even a narcissist could sell.

When you ask her genotype,

She's wondering if her phenotype is your type.

When you say, "Oh, you're beautiful,"

And she stares in the mirror, but a broken reflection stares back.

When you try to hold her, she flinches because somehow physical touch isn't intimacy; it's degradation.

When you write like Shakespeare,

She doesn't feel like Cupid shot an arrow.

The idea of being someone's Juliet

Irritates her because there's no Romeo, only Prince Hans.

Like Snow White, the manly figures in her life handed her to others.

She was left vulnerable, feeling like charcoal black.

The ebony beauty and the afro hair praised,

She only saw a skin soaked in too much melanin.

Her eyes and teeth were the only white in the dark.

She only saw the 4C hair that shrunk just like her.

Instead of accepting the praise of her height,

She succumbed to the voices calling her broom, pelenge and lepa.

When you tell her, "I love you,"

She knows she's not white like a Disney princess,

Not brave like Moana, 'cause she couldn't even lead herself out of her misery.

So she knows that love isn't for a servant,

For she made herself a servant to critics.

She's Rapunzel who didn't let down her hair

Because her afro is a crown.

Yet she caged herself up in that tower —

The tower her mind built.

So when you say let down your hair,

It doesn't sound like freedom, it sounds like trespassing.
