DEVIL IN ACCESSORIES
<p>If the devil walked into church tomorrow,</p><p>would you recognise him?</p><p><br/></p><p>What if he came in Agbada?</p><p><br/></p><p>What if he wore a cross around his neck,</p><p>quoted scriptures with confidence,</p><p>shook the pastor's hand,</p><p>and donated money before taking his seat?</p><p><br/></p><p>Would you still call him the devil?</p><p><br/></p><p>What generation have we become?</p><p><br/></p><p>Pious in status,</p><p>devil at home.</p><p><br/></p><p>Posting God,</p><p>then playing devil</p><p>behind the scene.</p><p><br/></p><p>Laughing at students during matriculation,</p><p>then rewarding them with low grades</p><p>because they refused</p><p>to trade their dignity</p><p>beneath your trousers.</p><p><br/></p><p>Ignoring righteousness</p><p>for the devil in Agbada.</p><p><br/></p><p>Talking down on those</p><p>who choose the right path,</p><p>because their honesty</p><p>makes your shortcuts uncomfortable.</p><p><br/></p><p>We celebrate the man in a convoy,</p><p>but never ask</p><p>whose hands were emptied</p><p>to build his comfort.</p><p><br/></p><p>We call a woman respectable</p><p>because of what she wears,</p><p>while forgetting</p><p>that clothes cannot testify</p><p>to what happens when the door is locked.</p><p><br/></p><p>We teach children to fear God,</p><p>then teach them how to lie for us.</p><p><br/></p><p>We demand respect from the young,</p><p>while giving them reasons</p><p>to lose faith in the old.</p><p><br/></p><p>We condemn corruption online,</p><p>then negotiate our own little corruption</p><p>when nobody is recording.</p><p><br/></p><p>We pray against wickedness in the morning,</p><p>then become somebody's wickedness</p><p>before sunset.</p><p><br/></p><p>We preach hard work,</p><p>but recommend connections.</p><p><br/></p><p>We praise merit</p><p>until merit threatens</p><p>someone we know.</p><p><br/></p><p>We tell students</p><p>education is the key,</p><p>then lock the door</p><p>when they refuse to play dirty.</p><p><br/></p><p>We ask the young to be patient,</p><p>while rewarding those</p><p>who know how to bend the rules.</p><p><br/></p><p>We call it favour</p><p>when it benefits us,</p><p>corruption</p><p>when it benefits another.</p><p><br/></p><p>We dress hypocrisy in religion</p><p>and wonder why</p><p>nobody smells the rot.</p><p><br/></p><p>May we grow</p><p>to the stage</p><p>where we judge people</p><p>not by their outlook,</p><p>but by their inlook.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because perhaps</p><p>the devil has become smarter.</p><p><br/></p><p>He no longer needs horns.</p><p><br/></p><p>He can wear a senator's cap,</p><p>a professor's gown,</p><p>a pastor's suit,</p><p>a scholar's certificate,</p><p>a father's Agbada, e.t.c</p><p><br/></p><p>And we will applaud.</p><p><br/></p><p>We will bow.</p><p><br/></p><p>We will call him honourable.</p><p><br/></p><p>Because sometimes,</p><p>the devil is not</p><p>the person we were warned about.</p><p><br/></p><p>Sometimes,</p><p>he is the person</p><p>everybody told us to respect.</p>
