Do You Plan Your Entire Novel Before Starting Chapter One?
<p>I’ve always wondered how other writers approach this.</p><p><em>Do you plan your entire novel before writing Chapter One, or do you simply have an idea, create your main characters, and start writing to see where the story takes you?</em></p><p>Personally, I think there’s something exciting about having a general idea of where the story is going without knowing every single thing that will happen. Sometimes, the best plot twists are the ones you discover while writing.</p><p>Some writers have the ending, character arcs, major twists, and chapter-by-chapter outline planned before writing the first sentence. Others only have an idea, a few characters, and a vague direction, and let the story unfold naturally.</p><p>But at the same time, writing without a proper plan can become a nightmare.</p><p>You might start with an amazing idea for the first few chapters, only to realize halfway through the book that you’ve used up all your best ideas. Or you suddenly have no idea how to connect the characters and events you introduced at the beginning.</p><p>Then there’s the other problem.</p><p>You can spend days or even weeks, planning every chapter, every plot twist, every character development and every major event, only to start writing and realize your characters have completely different plans. </p><p><em>Do you prefer to be a plotter or a pantser? </em></p><p>Do you outline your entire novel before writing Chapter One, or do you prefer to discover the story as you go?</p><p>Do you have every chapter planned out, or just the major events?</p><p>I’d genuinely love to know how other writers work because I feel like every writer has their own method. </p>
