Don't quit halfway: finish your dose

Feeling better is not equal to being healed.

Meet Tunde, a 28 year old trader who works long hours and hardly hard time to rest.

One day, he started feeling hot, weak and tired.

He went to the clinic and the doctor gave him antibiotics to take for seven days.

"Take all of it ," the doctor said. Tunde nodded but wasn't going to take it all.

The drug is too bitter, it is too much, different complaints running through Tunde's head.

Day 1 and Day 2: He took the drugs on time. The fever was still there but it was going down.

Day 3: He woke up feeling strong, no fever, no pain, no weakness.

Then he stopped taking the remaining drugs because he was feeling better already and because he doesn't like taking them.

But here's what Tunde didn't know.

Inside his body, the antibiotics had killed most of the germs, that's why he felt better .

The stronger ones were still alive and were only weakened, not finished.

With no more drugs to stop them, they started multiplying again quietly.

Day 8: The fever came back, worse than before, his chest and head were paining him too and even fainted in church due to lack of sufficient food, which is caused by loss of appetite.

He took the remaining drugs, but did not work well anymore, so he ran back to the clinic.

The doctor had to prescribe stronger drugs and they were more expensive.

Tunde spent more money and suffered longer than he should have.

This is what we called antibiotic resistance.

It simply means the germs have learnt how to survive the drug.

And it doesn't stop with Tunde, tough germs can spread to his family, friends and his neighbors.

So please learn from Tunde.

Take drugs only when the doctor prescribe them.

Finish the full dose, even if you feel fine.

Never keep leftover drugs for next time.

Don't share your drugs with anyone, even if you have the same symptoms.

Don't buy drugs because someone said "it worked for me."

Have you ever stopped your drugs halfway? Tell us in the comments.
