Free WiFi Is Never Free
<h4><strong>Amaka had 4% battery, 12% data, and an</strong></h4><h4><strong> assignment due at midnight.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>She was in the library at 9 p.m. when she saw it:</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/> FREE_CAMPUS_WIFI. No password.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>"God is working," she whispered.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>She tapped Connect.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>It worked at once. </strong></h4><h4><br/></h4><h4><strong>She submitted her assignment, checked her</strong></h4><h4><strong> school portal, logged into her email, and</strong></h4><h4><strong> even opened her bank app to confirm her pocket money had come in.</strong></h4><p><strong><br/></strong></p><h4><strong><br/>Across the room, a student in a grey hoodie</strong></h4><h4><strong> looked up from his laptop.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>He smiled slightly.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>9:42 p.m. Amaka packed her bag and went</strong></h4><h4><strong> back to her hostel, happy.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>11:15 p.m. A notification: "Your email</strong></h4><h4><strong> password was changed."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>She frowned. </strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong>Maybe it was a glitch. </strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong>She tried to log in. </strong></h4><h4><strong>Wrong password.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>11:20 p.m. Her phone buzzed again. "New</strong></h4><h4><strong> sign-in to your school portal from an</strong></h4><h4><strong> unknown device."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>Her heart began to pound.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>11:26 p.m. Her bank app sent an alert: "Debit: ₦18,000."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>She had not spent anything.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>Amaka stood frozen in the dark, her phone glowing in her hand.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>The next morning, she went to the ICT office, shaking. </strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong>The officer listened and nodded slowly.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>"That network wasn't ours," he said.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong> "Someone set up a fake Wi-Fi with a friendly name. </strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong>Anyone who connected, he could watch what they sent."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>"But... I didn't give anyone my password."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>"You typed it," he said gently. "He didn't need to ask."</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>Amaka got her accounts back after a long</strong></h4><h4><strong> day of resets and calls. </strong></h4><h4><strong><br/></strong></h4><h4><strong>The bank reversed the debit, but only</strong></h4><h4><strong> because she reported it fast.</strong></h4><h4><strong><br/>She never connected to a "Free Wi-Fi" the same way again.</strong></h4>
