FRIENDSHIP: THE PEOPLE WE CHOOSE

Friendship is one of the most beautiful relationships we can have.

You meet someone as a stranger, and slowly, they become someone you cannot imagine your life without. You start talking every day. You share your secrets, jokes, problems, plans, and even the smallest things that happen in your life.

Before you know it, that person has become family.

But friendship is not always perfect.

Sometimes, your friends will disappoint you. Sometimes, they will say things that hurt you. Sometimes, you will misunderstand each other, have arguments, or go through moments when you wonder if the friendship is still worth keeping.

And honestly, that is normal.

No friendship can survive without mistakes.

What matters is how both people handle those mistakes.

A real friend is not someone who will never hurt you. A real friend is someone who is willing to admit when they are wrong, listen to how you feel, apologize, and make an effort to do better.

Friendship requires understanding.

There will be times when your friend is not as available as they used to be. They may be dealing with school, work, family problems, relationships, or personal struggles that they have not told you about.

So before saying, "My friend doesn't care about me anymore," sometimes it is better to ask, "Are you okay?"

That simple question can save a friendship.

We also need to understand that people show love differently.

Some friends call you every day. Some may not call often, but whenever you need them, they are there.

Some express their feelings openly, while others struggle to say what is in their hearts.

Not everyone will love you in exactly the way you love them. And that does not always mean they don't care.

A good friendship should also allow both people to grow.

Your friend should be happy when you succeed. They should not feel threatened because you are doing well. They should not compete with you over everything or make you feel guilty for becoming a better version of yourself.

A true friend can look at your success and genuinely say, "I'm happy for you."

That kind of friendship is precious.

But friendship is not only about being there during happy moments.

Anyone can celebrate with you when everything is going well.

The real test comes when things become difficult.

Who checks on you when you disappear?

Who stays when you are going through something?

Who listens when you need to talk?

Who can sit with you in silence without making you feel uncomfortable?

Sometimes, friendship is not about doing something big.

It can be a simple message:

"Have you eaten?"

"How was your day?"

"You have been quiet lately. Is everything okay?"

Small things can mean so much when they come from someone who genuinely cares.

However, friendship should not be one-sided.

You cannot always expect your friend to call first. You cannot always expect them to apologize first. You cannot expect them to understand you while you refuse to understand them.

If you want good friends, you must also learn to be a good friend.

Check on them.

Listen to them.

Celebrate them.

Correct them when they are wrong, but do it with love.

And when you hurt them, don't allow pride to stop you from saying, "I'm sorry."

Sometimes, one simple apology can save something that years of friendship built.

But there is another difficult truth about friendship:

Not everyone is meant to stay forever.

Some friendships last for years. Some last for a few months. Some people come into your life during a particular season, teach you something, create beautiful memories with you, and eventually, you both move in different directions.

It can hurt, especially when you thought that person would always be there.

But sometimes, letting go is also part of growing.

People change.

Priorities change.

Lives change.

Sometimes, two people can care about each other and still grow apart.

That does not mean the friendship was fake. It simply means that some chapters have an ending.

So, appreciate the friends you have today.

Don't wait until you lose someone before realizing how much they meant to you.

Send that message.

Make that call.

Say thank you.

Tell your friend that you appreciate them.

And if there is a misunderstanding, talk about it instead of allowing silence to destroy the relationship.

At the same time, don't force friendships that constantly make you feel unwanted, disrespected, or exhausted.

Friendship should bring peace, not constant anxiety.

You deserve people who respect you.

People who can correct you without humiliating you.

People who can celebrate you without competing with you.

People who can tell you the truth without trying to bring you down.

People who can see your weaknesses and still choose to love you.

And you should be that kind of friend too.

Because at the end of the day, friendship is not about having hundreds of people around you.

It is about having a few people with whom you can be completely yourself.

People you can laugh with until your stomach hurts.

People you can cry in front of without feeling ashamed.

People you can call at your lowest moment.

People who genuinely want to see you win.

If you have people like that in your life, treasure them.

Life is already difficult enough.

Having good friends makes the journey a little lighter.

And sometimes, the greatest blessing is not having many friends.

It is having the right ones.
