HALCYON DAYS

Where did the good old days go?

I mean, the 90s when life was simple,

easier and, in many ways, more beautiful

than what we have now.

Scrolling through Tiktok and I happened on

some random posts that poked my memory.

Memory from far away and in that memory,

I was a child who was relishing the perks of the

most amazing time to be alive.

It is almost impossible to remember those

days without a lone tear travelling the distance

from my eyes to my chin.

Growing up, my father had stories of his time,

one that, according to him, was better than what

I was experiencing at the time. Now I also have my own

stories of days gone by.

Was it the Children's Day parade? Or the countdowns to Christmas

from November? Was it the compulsory Saturday morning chores

we carried out with grumbling soundtracks as daddy sat in the

living room, face buried in the papers.

Breakfasts alternated between tea and bread, akamu and akara,

fried egg and bread but never

eba, definitely not rice. That was the crown of Sundays.

Rice and stew was so loved that Saturday nights were for making stews.

I mean, October 1st was actually a day we greeted one another,

"Happy Independence", after listened to the National broadcast by the

President at 7am.

Don't get me started on the kind of entertainment we had back then;

music was rich, lyrics held hints of painstaking efforts. Artists like:

Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, KennyG,

Yanni, Oliver de Coke, Blackkie, etc.

Most of whom our daddies made us love.

The best soap operas: When you are mine, Secrets of the Sand,

Wale Adenuga's Super Story series etc.

I miss yesterday so much and I doubt there'll ever be

a time I'll stop reminiscing the gift of experiencing life

in its fullest.
