Hepburn presents: Obiageli the Orphan

Obiageli woke up at the first crow of dawn in Ekpe village, she had to start her chores early especially if she was to leave for school on time so as to miss the headmaster’s dreaded cane.

This was in those days, so having a clock wasn’t normal except if you lived in the township. But instinctively Obiageli knew the time was at least to six. With a short grunt she stepped outside to pass water before rinsing her hands and pouring the rest of the cold water on her face to fight any remaining sleep.

She first started out by picking the nylons and dirts in Officer John’s compound. She had lived here ever since she was six years old. Her father left at a young age leaving only her and her sick mother to fed for themselves, at six she lost the only family she had ever known.

Officer John was well known around the village as a good prideful man. He was the type to help if he knew people were watching, he always saw opportunities to do go as businesses after all one day they may elect me to be chief he thought.

So when Obiageli’s mother passed and no one could carry an extra mouth to feed Officer John jumped in as the solution. He spoke to the elders and pitched that little Obiageli should join his family and his children, he needed more hands in the farm and from there he’d make sure to provide food for her. The elders weren’t really listening, but were happy to be rid of the burden as fast as possible. This was how Obiageli came to live in the torture known as Officer John’s house
