Hooked on a Hobby

About five years ago, I made one of my most meaningful purchases, my first proper crochet set.

Before then, I had been using the very basic hooks sold in local shops. I worked with what I had, learning different stitches, experimenting with designs, and creating things with my hands. But as I continued crocheting and gradually turned my hobby into a business, I realised I needed to upgrade my tools.

So, I started saving. I put aside money I received as gifts and money I earned from my crafts until I could afford the crochet set I wanted. It was a big purchase for me at the time, and felt like a significant decision. I knew I was making the purchase for a reason, I wanted to improve my craft and grow my business.

Looking back, I think what made the purchase special was not just getting a new set of hooks. It was the feeling of being able to invest in something I had worked towards myself. I had started with the most basic tools available, but I was willing to save and take a step towards improving what I could offer.

Crocheting also taught me something important about money and creativity. I learnt that you don’t necessarily need expensive resources to create something beautiful. Sometimes, you start with what you have, make the most of it, and gradually invest in better tools as you grow.

That little crochet set opened me up to more creative possibilities, encouraged me to take my business more seriously, and introduced me to wonderful people along the way. Even though I no longer crochet for business, I still return to it whenever something inspires me. I can pick up my hooks and create something beautiful with my own hands.

Five years later, I still see that purchase as more than just a crochet hook set.
