A tiny disclaimer before we begin:

I was actually supposed to post this last night, but I completely forgot. So, technically, this is yesterday's entry arriving a little late. Obviously, the days are a little jumbled up already so I might also post again tonight so I can get the posts a little more aligned with the actual days of the journey.

That's all 😅

Day 2: Meet Skelly

I've been told that I'm a little weird sometimes, and time and time again, I have failed to try to beat those allegations. To be honest, I don't really think I care enough.

I think one of the things I miss most about being a kid is how little I cared about whether the things I was interested in made sense to anyone else.

I didn't need a reason to want to learn it either. I didn't need to be good at it. I didn't need to figure out what I was going to do with the skill afterwards. Trying was more than enough.

Somewhere along the way, I think I started asking myself too many questions.

Is this useful?

Am I actually good at it?

Do I have enough time for this?

What's the point?

And obviously, that just led me to drop it entirely.

So I suppose drawing again is a small way of going back to that.

•••

For day 2, I knew I wanted to draw.

To be honest, I don't think I've picked up a pencil since the start of this year, despite being continuously encouraged into doing so by some of my closest friends.

But I've finally decided to listen.

I knew, though, that whatever drawing skills I used to have probably weren't going to be exactly where I left them.

And whenever I find myself in this position, for some reason, I always end up drawing one of two things (because for some other reason, these are the only things I'm capable of drawing); Skulls or hands 🙈

Specifically, my actual hands.

I decided to go with the former.

I have absolutely no explanation for this, but I've always loved drawing skulls. I'm a little obsessed with skull art, but not the gory kind, though. More like the pretty, fun, artistic kind like my profile picture, or something with flowers or butterflies or something 😂

I could probably fill this entire post with the many different skulls I've drawn over the years, but this series isn't about me desperately trying to hold on to my past glory.

So I'll save that for another time.

For now, allow me to introduce Skelly.

No, I've never named any of my drawings before.

But I guess there's a first time for everything.

I've never been the most creative artist and usually draw from references, so it's safe to say I didn't come up with Skelly entirely on my own.

I'd found her reference on Pinterest and immediately knew...it?...she?...was what I wanted to draw.

So here we are.

I am... proud of Skelly.

I think she could have been better, but I'm proud of her nonetheless. I'm honestly not sure how I even managed to get this far with her after going so long without drawing, but I'm actually really happy with the outcome.

Maybe little me would be proud too 🥹

So, yes, on Day 2, I spent most of my free time (re)creating Skelly.

And I also spent a little more time learning ASL on ASL Bloom.

I really enjoy the app, and so far, I haven't found a reason to go back to the other two. Maybe I will with time, but not yet.

(Why does this sound like an ad?)

I would have included a screenshot of my progress, but I forgot to take one. And by the time I remembered, I'd already started another lesson the next day, so it wouldn't have been an accurate representation of Day 2 anymore.

But please believe me when I say, I actually learned something.

I haven't given up on myself just yet 😂
