Chapter One

Liora's POV

Eighteen years ago, Kaelen my mate, the Alpha of Blackthorn looked me in the eye and promised we'd never have pups of our own. The pack didn't need heirs, he said. We'd rule together, just the two of us, unburdened.

I believed him. Not just believed in built my whole life around it. So when the Healer told me my womb was cursed, and Kaelen gently pushed me toward the ritual that would take away any chance of bearing children, I didn't fight it. I let them do it. For him. For us, I told myself.

I never once looked back. Not until the night he came home with two pups in his arms, a boy and a girl, barely a few moons old, wrapped in furs that didn't smell like our den. Their scent was wrong. Unfamiliar. Their bloodline, a mystery.

"Found them at the border," he said, so smooth I didn't think to question it. His silver eyes didn't so much as flicker. "They need a mother, Liora. Will you take them in?"

I said yes before he'd even finished asking.

From then on, I gave those two everything I had. I taught them to shift. I held them through the nights the moon pulled too hard and their bones cracked and reset. I sat up with them through fevers, trained them to fight, packed their bags before every patrol, kissed their foreheads more times than I could count.

I loved them like they were carved from my own bones.

And they grew into something worth that love one accepted into the Elder Council's academy, the other chosen as an envoy to the Lycan Courts.

I remember standing there thinking my chest might actually split open from pride. Whatever blood ran in them, they were mine. I'd never doubted that.

Then came their send-off feast. The whole pack howling under a full moon, and Kaelen pressing a scroll into my hands.

"It's time," he said. Calm. Final. "Sign it over. Everything goes to the twins now."

I didn't hesitate. I reached for the quill like it was nothing.

That's when my mother caught my wrist hard enough to hurt. Her eyes were wild.

"Do you even know whose blood is in those children?" she whispered. "You're handing them everything. Keep something back. Please, Liora."

I just smiled at her. "It doesn't matter whose blood it is, Mother. They're mine. I know it in my chest."

She broke down right there. And then my father came storming in, and before I understood what was happening, his hand connected with my face.

"You're disgracing our bloodline," he snarled. "Giving away the Oldfang legacy to pups nobody can even name?"

I signed anyway.

That's when I saw the way Kaelen's mouth curved not a smile, really. More like a wolf showing teeth. He reached back and pulled a woman forward in front of everyone. Golden-haired, smug, gorgeous in a way that felt deliberate. His hand found her waist like it had done it a thousand times before.

She dropped a piece of parchment at my feet without a word first just let it fall, then looked up at me.

"Thank you for raising Kaelen's pups," she said, savoring every syllable. "But you can step aside now. It's time our family was whole."

Somebody in the crowd gasped. I felt the cold hit me before I even understood what I was looking at. A divorce decree.

I made myself look at her. Really look. This was Seraphine once just another hunter in my ranks, nothing special, or so I'd thought. Ambitious, sharp, always watching. I should have seen this coming. She hadn't just been climbing the pack's ranks. She'd been climbing into my mate's bed the entire time.

"Fine," I said. My voice didn't shake. I made sure of that.

Inside, though inside, everything was coming apart.

"So that's it," I said, turning to Kaelen. "You've been sleeping with her this whole time?"

Seraphine didn't even blink. "Don't make this ugly, Liora. If you actually loved him, you'd want what's best for him. Even if that's not you."

"Enough," Kaelen cut in, sharp now. "Sign it and let's be done."

I looked at him really looked and for a second I didn't see the Alpha everyone bowed to.

I saw the half-starved omega boy who used to show up shaking at my door, begging for scraps. I was the one who took him in. Fed him. Loved him before anyone else would.

And now he was throwing me away in front of the entire pack, for the woman he'd apparently never stopped wanting.

The whispers started before I even moved.

She gave up her own womb for him.

Raised pups that weren't even hers.

And this is how he repays her.

My nails bit into my palms. I stood there in the middle of my own life, and I didn't recognize a single piece of it anymore.

@Aeesha Abdullahi Alhaji
