I fasted for fried things for #300

One afternoon after lectures, my friends said, "Let's go and eat shawarma."

Everybody cheered.

I cheered too, because I'm a team player.

Then I opened my wallet and found ₦300.

That ₦300 was my transport fare home.

It was not for shawarma.

It was not for vibes.

It was not even mine, spiritually.

It belonged to the keke man.😭

But I had already said "yes" with my whole chest, so I followed them anyway.

Mistake number one. 😭

At the shawarma stand, the smell came out and attacked me personally.

My friends started ordering like their parents were government contractors.

"Double sausage!" "Extra cream!" "Add more pepper!"

Meanwhile, I was standing there calculating how long I could survive on water and pride.

Then the cashier looked at me. "And you?"😏

I smiled like someone with a trust fund and said, "Ah, I just ate before class." 😌

Reader, I had not eaten since morning.

The last thing I ate was hope.

One of my friends said, "Are you sure? You can taste mine."

And because I had already started the lie, I had to commit to the bit.

"No, no, I'm fasting from fried things this week."

Fasting?

From fried things?

Which religion?

Which week?

Who gave me that rule? 😭

Right on cue, my stomach let out a growl so loud that a man at the next table turned around.

So I coughed.

Then I coughed again, louder, like a person with a serious chest problem.

A friend asked, "Are you okay?" and I said, "Dust."

There was no dust.

We were at a food stand.

I had just invented a new weather condition.

To save myself, I brought out my lab manual and started reading it like it was a thrilling novel.

I had avoided that book all semester, but suddenly page 14 was the most fascinating thing I had ever seen.

Nodding. Frowning.

Even whispering "Interesting." Interesting? It was a table of contents. 😂

I walked home that day with my ₦300 intact and my dignity in pieces.

Every step, I could still smell the shawarma on my friends' clothes.

By the time I got in, I was so hungry that I ate garri with the confidence of a five-star chef.
