The problem with most of us is not that we are not good at a skill, trade, subject, etc, neither is it that such tasks are too difficult. The problem most times is that we lack the patience to work on our skills long enough and hard enough. Sometimes back, while reading a book by Brian Tracy, I stumbled on a phrase turned mantra along the lines of "Far and away the greatest good that has happened to the human race is the ability to achieve whatever you want as long as you can work at it long enough and hard enough" (paraphrased).

The story of world renowned professionals give more credence to the above quote. Denzel Washington, Lionel Messi, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Aaron Spears, LeBron James, and a host of other veterans in their respective fields have shown that repeated practice, discipline, long-term focus, adaptability and showing up consistently over many years births an unimaginable level of mastery in one's field.

How many people are actually ready to sit with a problem till they get it solved?

How many people are ready to keep pushing till a situation changes?

How many people are ready to read and ask questions till they understand that difficult course?

The answer? ..... Not many people.

But it is possible to be among the "not many people" who are working and seeing results.

Asides the lack of patience required to hone our skills through regular and consistent practice, another problem is that we are most times thrilled by the speed, eloquence, dexterity, etc that show mastery of the veterans that we want to start off performing at the same speed, eloquence, dexterity and so on, forgetting that "slow and steady wins the race".

I'll end with this quote from the legendary Martin Luther King Jr.

"If you can't fly, then run;

If you can't run, then walk;

If you can't walk, then crawl;

But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward".

Upvote, comment, share.
